When you start looking and listening for the word confidence, you will be amazed how often the word is used in our daily vocabulary. Sports announcers use the word confidence to describe an athlete’s impressive performance. Businesses create television commercials that build the customer’s confidence in their services or products. Motivational speakers and training coaches talk about the need for confidence. Pastors use the word to encourage their parishioners.

The word confidence appears over 100 times in different translations throughout the Holy Bible. Dr. Mike Murdock wrote, “Achievers are confident. They believe against all odds that they will win and succeed. The entire 11th chapter of Hebrews heralds the great achievers in Biblical history. Interestingly, two Greek words for faith denote traits of the confident achiever.”

In Genesis, the very first book of the Old Testament, you will discover Adam had a supreme level of self-confidence. When God brought all the animals before Adam to name, Adam did not doubt his ability to give each animal a specific name. What a huge challenge! There are millions of different species of animals on the earth. Go ahead, try it yourself. Start naming some animals and see how many you can name. What caused Adam to accomplish such an incredible task? It was Adam’s supreme level of confidence in his own abilities that caused him to perform at his full potential. He had no outside voices (or inside voices) telling him that he could not do it. Did you know an ant can carry 50 times its body weight? Why? Because the ant has never had an outside voice telling it that it could not do it. Did you know that it is a scientific fact that the bumblebee is NOT supposed to be able to fly? Its body is too big and its wings are too small to support its own weight. However, nobody ever told the bumblebee that it could’t fly. So guess what—it flies! If my guess is right, you have not been as fortunate as Adam, the ant, or the bumblebee. You have been told your dream is too big and your abilities and finances are too small. Don’t you think that it is time for you to stop allowing those outside and inside voices to kill your dreams and potential?

For the last three years I have had the pleasure of speaking in Garden Grove, California. While I am there, I enjoy taking a tour of the magnificent Crystal Cathedral pastored by the television personality, Dr. Robert Schuller. Confidence is the fuel that empowers your natural talents and causes you to perform at your maximum potential. It propels your ability to perform forward like the rocket boosters sending the space shuttle into orbit. Confidence is the force that launches your abilities to unlimited possibilities. Having a high level of confidence will open doors to success,  happiness, and peace of mind. However, self-doubt and insecurity will destroy or limit your natural talents, causing you to operate far below your potential. The hidden secret to becoming more successful than you are now is to improve and strengthen the abilities, talents, and strengths you already possess by boosting your confidence.

Scientists in the field of human potential have estimated that we use as little as ten percent of our abilities.1 This means that 90 percent of your capabilities may be lying dormant and wasted. It is sad to think that some people are only using a small portion of their abilities and talents because they lack the confidence needed to perform at their full potential. You have no idea how much talent and potential you really possess. It is time you stop allowing self-doubt and insecurity to destroy and limit your potential. I remember the day I discovered the reality that I have much more potential than I ever imagined. I was invited to train with my track coach for the Boston Marathon. My track coach was the best marathon runner in the tri-states (Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan). When I met him at the park, I discovered that we would be jogging ten miles that day. I had never jogged more than two miles a day in my entire life. I responded by saying, “I will never be able to go ten miles with you today.” My coach confidently said, “Sure you can! You are the best runner on the team.” His words gave me the confidence I needed to start the training period. The first two miles I was able to stay stride for stride with my coach. However, at the two-mile mark he decided to increase his speed. I said, “Hey! Why are you going so fast?” He said, “I was just warming up the first two miles. It is time to pick up the pace.” Instantly I thought, “Just warming up? I’m almost finished!” In an effort to impress my coach I forced myself to stay up with him. However, I continued to tell myself, “I can’t do this, I will never make it.” My coach kept increasing my confidence by saying, “Stay up with me! You can do it! You have the potential to be one of the best runners in this region!” To my surprise, I completed the third mile, the forth mile, the fifth mile, and the sixth mile. At the seventh mile marker an amazing thing happened to me. Something seemed to kick in—a sudden boost of energy. Keeping the pace now seemed effortless and I had the confidence to believe that I could finish the course. For the first time in my life I completed a ten-mile run, and afterward I was so energized with confidence I felt like I could run another ten miles. 


You possess more potential to be successful than you realize.

Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said, “Far too many people have no idea of what they can do because all they have been told is what they can’t do.” My coach told me from the beginning what I could do. Therefore, I was able to accomplish something that I had never done before. When people say you can’t do something respond to these confidence shakers by asking, “Why not?” You possess more potential to be a success in life than you realize!

Just imagine what you could accomplish if you had the confidence to support your natural abilities and true potential. What would your life be like? Where would you be today? I can guarantee you would be a lot further along in life.


The Difference

What is the difference between winning and losing, riches and poverty, and leaders and followers? What is the difference between those who perform at their best and win, and those who perform and lose? What is the difference between those who have millions in the bank and those who do not even have a bank account because they have no money to put in it?

What is the difference between the person who was raised in the best family atmosphere, but ends up with no job and the person who is raised in poverty and in an abusive home, like me, yet is able to travel the world, write books, and help millions of people unleash their potential?

The difference comes down to a person’s ability to maximize their internal and external communication that empowers them to maintain a peak confidence state and take action to produce the results they want in life.

Communication is the major force for empowering you to be at your best. Other than writing, there are two types of communication:

  • Internal – Inner self-talk in your mind.
  • External – Words you say verbally out loud.

Words can move masses of people in a single direction to achieve incredible dreams. The current U.S. president, Barak Obama, by far is one of the most gifted “large audience” communicators we have seen in the 21st century. He used his skill to influence Americans to vote for him in the primary election over Hillary Clinton and then over John McCain in the general election. Mandela used his communication skills to motivate the South African people to cast their votes to put him in office. Over three decades before, John F. Kennedy’s words persuaded the American people to invest in putting a man on the moon.

How you communicate internally and externally is a tool you can use to always be at your peak day in and day out. Just as these leaders were able to move the masses with their communication skills to make a decision, so can you use your skills to move you toward living every day at your peak so that you will always perform at your best in every circumstance, challenge, and situation that arises.

Living at Your Peak Every Day

I often travel to South Africa. One of South Africa’s favorite heroes is Nelson Mandela. But depending who you talk to, some South Africans think he is the greatest leader in history of the world and others think he is not even worth mentioning. However, one thing nobody can deny is his remarkable rise from being a prisoner on Robben Island to becoming the president of the entire country.

Richard Stengel, Time Magazine editor and author of Mandela’s Way: Lessons of Life, traveled with him almost every day for three years. In the book’s first chapter, “Courage is not the Absence of Fear,” he reveals one of Mandela’s key lessons of life: One had to put up a front. Sometimes it is only through putting up a brave front that you discover true courage. Sometimes the front is courage.[1]

He concludes the chapter with this great statement:

Mandela’s highest praise for someone he considered courageous is, “He did very well.” By that he does not mean that the fellow was a dramatic hero or that he risked his life in a great endeavor, but that, day in and day out, he remained steady under trying circumstances. That, day in and day out, he resisted giving in to fear and anxiety. All of us are capable of that kind of bravery—and fortunately, that is the only bravery most of us are called on to demonstrate.[2] 

Each new day presents us with new opportunities, challenges, problems to solve, and people to encounter. When these “life issues” present themselves, you want to be at your best. How can I always perform, speak, lead, behave, sell, or whatever you do in life at your best?

The Confidence to Live at Your Peak

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction

John Wooden and his legendary UCLA dynasty won ten NCAA championships in 12 years, including 88 straight games and four perfect seasons. He was also named coach of the century by ESPN. In his book, Wooden on Leadership, he writes of the key principle that he learned from his father, which he emphasized during his coaching career.

What he said about success—“winning the race”—was uncommon for his time and even more uncommon today. His words are the core of my philosophy of leadership, perhaps the single most important concept I’ve learned and taught over the years. “Sons,” he would tell my three brothers and me, “don’t worry about whether you’re better than somebody else, but never cease trying to be the best you can become. You have control over that; the other you don’t.” Time spent comparing myself to others, he cautioned, was time wasted. This is a tough lesson to learn when you’re young, even tougher when you grow up. “Johnny, work hard to get as good as you can get,” he’d say. “Do that and you may call yourself a success. Do less and you’ve fallen short.” I did my best to follow dad’s advice. 

So, say to yourself…I want to reinvent my life, explode my business, and skyrocket my income. Therefore, I must always push myself to become my personal best. Now, I know from personal experience how very easily I can be deceived by my own exaggerated opinion of myself. I have a tendency to believe my own headlines. I often find myself thinking I am doing my best. But I must always ask myself this self-coaching question, Can I better my best? The answer is always, Yes, I can better my best. This is the true attitude for ambition that is defined as “the desire to be the best at what I do” in the dictionary. In my seminars, I often say, “I can teach you the tools for success, but you must have a personal ambition to succeed.”

I want to become the best that I can be. What about you? Compete with yourself by becoming your best; then compete against yourself and compare only against yourself.

All the confidence in the world is meaningless if you do not have the knowledge it takes to put your confidence to use. Confidence is built upon what you know. Ignorance breeds fear; the more you learn about your subject, the less power fear has over you. When you increase information, you increase confidence. Learn all there is to know about your field of business: daily operations, customers, competitors, services, and product lines. Invest in yourself, your education, and the tools you need to acquire knowledge. Also invest in relationships; surround yourself with people who have wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

Key 2. Turn your car into a university on wheels.

Listen to educational audio programs in your car. The average person drives between 12,000 and 25,000 miles per year, which works out to spending between 500 and 1,000 hours per year in the car. You can become an expert in your field by simply listening to educational audio programs as you drive from place to place. Many stores sell audio tapes, CDs, and video tapes featuring top personal development trainers and business leaders. 

Key 3. Attend seminars given by experts in your field.

Learn from the experts. Ask them questions, write them letters, read their books, read their articles, and listen to people with proven track records in the area in which you want to be successful. 

Key 4. Take additional courses and learn everything you possibly can.

Pursue an advanced degree or take some intensive training classes. You can become an expert and gain additional self-confidence if you are willing to pay the price of extra effort. 

Key 5. Search the Internet.

We are living in the information age. The Internet is a wonderful source for finding information. Add your name to some mailing lists of organizations or groups of people in your professional field. All types of terrific information is out there waiting for you.

The Secret Sauce to Becoming World-Class

What quality does Jesus Christ, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, Margaret Thatcher, Zig Ziglar, Ken Blanchard, Coach John Wooden, and George Foreman have in common?

  • They are considered by many as world-class leaders.
  • They had confidence, competence, and character that brought them recognition.
  • The impact of their lives will last for generations.
  • They have high moral character and reputation.
  • They have the power of the 3Cs—extreme levels of confidence, competence, and character in their professions.

Point 1 – Confidence

Why is the lion considered the king of the jungle? Because he’s the biggest, fastest, prettiest, hardest working animal in the jungle? No! So why is he the king and on top? Because he’s the most confident! What I have discovered is that this truth in the jungle is also true in the financial, business, and cultural jungles in which we live.

I love leadership and I love history and one of my favorite people to read about is Harry Truman, who becomes a greater president in the eyes of many the longer he is gone. During his bid for the presidency in 1948, no one gave him a shot to win against challenger Thomas Dewey. During the campaign, Truman asked a man in the crowd how he intended to vote. “Mr. Truman,” the man said, “I wouldn’t vote for you if yours were the only name on the ballot.” Truman turned to an aide and said, “Put him down as doubtful.”

Confidence is one of your most valuable assets, and more is always better. Confidence breeds successful leaders. Confident leaders possess more: 

  • Happiness! More Money!
  • Creative Ideas! More Solutions to Problems!
  • Success! More Power!
  • Relationships! More Fun!

There are nearly six billion people in the world. Young and old. Rich and poor. They come from different walks of life. They come from different nationalities, cultures, and languages. But they all have one need in common—CONFIDENCE. They need the confidence that can empower them to live life at its fullest.

Everybody wants to have more confidence, more success, more money and more fun. Right? It is not really “super hard” to obtain these things. If you buy into the myth that gaining more confidence is hard, you will not even try to obtain it. Obtaining more confidence, success, money, and fun is not a matter of working harder, it is a matter of creating the right success habits. What becomes a habit will become easy in time.

The success of your future is hidden in your daily habits. You do not determine your future; you determine your daily habits. Your daily habits ultimately determine your future.

Confidence is in Your Hand!

My favorite scripture in the Bible is Hebrews 10:35, “Therefore, do not cast away your confidence; It will bring you a great reward.” 

Confidence is in your hand. You can hold onto it or you can chose to let it go, it’s up to you. However, your decision is going to determine if you experience the abundant rewards life has to offer or the meager misfortune of an unrewarded and unmotivated lifestyle. 

We all have tremendous potential. Scientists in human potential have estimated that most people are only operating at 2% of their greatest potential. Each of us has the ability to put our unique human potential into action and to acquire a desired result. But the one thing that determines the level of our potential, produces the intensity of our activity, and predicts the quality of the result we receive is our CONFIDENCE. 

Confidence determines how much of the future we are allowed to see, create, and eventually manifest. It decides the size of our dreams and influences our degree of persistence and determination when we are faced with new challenges. Confidence decides our wealth, health, and the quality of our relationships. 

No other person on earth has dominion or control over your confidence levels. People can affect your confidence by saying negative things, teaching you poor thinking habits, or unintentionally misinforming you, but no one can control your confidence levels unless you voluntarily surrender that control. 

No one else “makes you fearful or doubtful.” You make yourself fearful, insecure, or doubtful when you surrender control of your confidence. What someone else may have said or done is totally irrelevant! 

You choose; not they. They merely put your CONFIDENCE to a test. They are trying to steal something that doesn’t belong to them. If you chose to let go, if you select fear, uncertainty, and doubt, then you have failed the test. You have allowed them to rip you off of the fantastic future God has for you. 

If you condemn yourself by believing that you are unworthy, then again, you have failed the test. If you care at all about yourself, then you must accept 100% responsibility for your own thinking patterns and your own feelings. You must learn to guard against those negative thoughts and feelings that have the capacity to lead your confidence down the wrong path, and to strengthen those thoughts and feelings that can lead you confidently into a better future. 

If you want to receive the REWARDS the future holds in trust for you, then you must exercise the most important choice given to you by God as members of the human race by maintaining total dominion over your THOUGHTS and CONFIDENCE levels. 

Your confidence is an asset, a treasure of great value that must be protected accordingly. When you have high confidence levels, you can do the remarkable. 

CONFIDENCE is the fuel of CHANGE! 

When you recognize your personal power and unique gifts, you can CHANGE anything for yourself that you wish to change. If you don’t like how something is going for you, change it. If something isn’t enough, change it. If something doesn’t suit you; change it. If something doesn’t please you, change it. You don’t ever have to be the same after today. If you don’t like your present address, change it—you’re not a tree! 

Being confident is an essential prerequisite for success and happiness. Confidence is one of the fundamentals of the ABUNDANT LIFE. That is why you must constantly examine your thoughts and feelings about your role in the world and about your possibilities for achieving your dreams. 

It is your emotional nature that governs most of your daily conduct in your personal and business world. It is the emotional aspect of your experiences that determines our behavior. 

How you feel about life’s events is a powerful force that can either freeze you in our tracks or inspire you to take immediate action on any given day. With confidence, human beings can move mountains. With fear, doubt, and uncertainty, they can be crushed by the smallest grain of sand.

What Will You Create to be the Results?

Dr. Thomas Stanley is the author of two best-selling books, The Millionaire Next Door and The Millionaire Mind. He has spent a great deal of his life studying the actions and thoughts of highly successful people, particularly millionaires. Dr. Stanley conducted a national survey on the actions and thought processes used by millionaires to eliminate/reduce fears and worries when difficult circumstances arose. He received 733 responses. Here are the top ten life skills used by millionaires:

  • Believing in Myself—94 percent
  • Hard Work—94 percent
  • Preparation—93 percent
  • Focusing on Key Issues—91 percent
  • Being Decisive—89 percent
  • Planning—87 percent
  • Being Well-organized—83 percent
  • Visualizing Success—68 percent

I was so excited when I saw this report.[1] One thing you cannot argue with is results. Those surveyed have a proven track record—they are millionaires. Information is great but it must be supported with results.

This survey adds fuel to my point that belief and self-confidence are the major differences between the person who lives an uncommon life and the person who lives a common life. Ninety-four percent of the millionaires surveyed indicated that a major key to their ability to overcome negativity, worry, and fear is the direct result of “believing in themselves.”

I also like the fact that believing in myself and hard work were actually tied together. This proves my point that believing in one’s potential will cause a person to take action and work really hard. The confident person believes that he is equal to the size of his obstacles. He believes he can achieve success and significance. This man or woman will win the confidence of followers. Those who have accomplished great things in the world were not afraid of progress. They stepped out of their past prisons and into their future potential. They dared to be leaders in the midst of followers.

Develop Your Potential

From the time you were conceived in your mother’s womb, your destiny and potential started running into your future and they are waiting for you to catch up. My definition of potential is simply the gap between your current achievements and your possibilities for the future.

What is potential? One of the most thorough definitions of potential is given by Dr. Myles Munroe. He defines your true potential this way: 

POTENTIAL IS…Unexposed ability, reserved power, untapped strength, uncapped capabilities, unused success, dormant gifts, hidden talent and latent power. 

POTENTIAL IS…Doing what you have not yet done. Going where you have not yet one. Becoming the person you have not yet been. Imagining what you have not yet imagined. Reaching what you have not yet reached. Seeing that which you have not yet seen. Accomplishing that which you have not yet accomplished.[1]


The simple truth is that you and I have more natural potential than we could use in a lifetime. The release of your potential demands that you refuse to be satisfied with your past or latest accomplishments. What you have currently accomplished is only a fraction of what is truly possible for you. Yes, I was the best track runner on the team, but was I running at my full potential? No! My true potential had not been released yet.

The gap between where you are and where you want to be will always demand a new level of confidence. If you are continually stretching yourself to maximize your full potential, you should never feel satisfied, content, or comfortable. Satisfaction and contentment with your current level of success kills your potential. When you get to the place where you are content with your latest accomplishments, you put yourself into a box of containment that keeps you from accomplishing more.

Potential is crying out from your future saying, “You can be, do, have, and help more. Keep reaching.”


When you perform at your best you maximize potential. Confidence is the fuel that empowers your natural talents and causes you to perform at your maximum potential. I have read various scientific reports in the field of human potential that have estimated that we use as little as 10 percent of our abilities. This means that 90 percent of your capabilities may be lying dormant and wasted. You have no idea how much talent and potential you really possess. It is time you stop allowing self-doubt and insecurity to destroy and limit your potential.

When my confidence increased, both my performance and potential increased as well. If I had continued to listen to my self-doubts, I would have never tried to accomplish something that I had never before attempted. Confidence to be Rich

I used to make this statement, “They are filthy rich.” Have you ever said that? It leaves the impression in your mind that anybody who got rich did it by doing something evil. Or that being classified as a “rich person” is associated with being dirty. No that’s a lie. Why don’t we say, “Those filthy poor people next door.” We don’t say that because it’s insensitive.

Don’t be afraid of money and getting rich. Money can resource great inventions, businesses, dreams, and projects. Money is not evil but the love of money is. Money is not good or evil or dirty. Money is simply an enhancer. If you were a jerk without money, you become a bigger jerk with money. If you were a fantastic person without money and you get wealth, it will make you even sweeter. The best thing you can do for the poor is not be one of them. What is the real difference between the rich and the poor? I believe that the rich decided they were going to be rich and the poor never made that decision. Have you made that decision?

The Confidence Coach Says: Money is the root to GREAT donations and vacations.

Extended seasons of poverty will cause you to believe things about yourself that simply are not true. My season of financial struggle almost made me begin to believe and think that I was a loser and always would be one. And some days I acted like one. When you believe things about yourself that are not true, you end up playing out the part of the negative things you believe about yourself.

Your belief about your future potential is going to shape the size of your thinking.

How big you think reveals your level of confidence.

Do you think you have an incredible future? How much do you see yourself achieving in the future? The size of your belief in your future determines the level of confidence you have in yourself.

Your dream will never grow beyond your thinking capacity. You cannot create any further than you can think. If you cannot see yourself accomplishing wonderful things, this reveals your lack of belief in yourself. Refusing to think small and negative thoughts about yourself is the first step toward resetting your mindset and changing your destiny.

Success in life comes when you start thinking like a king thinks.

Several years ago, world famous golfer Arnold Palmer was asked to play golf with the king of Saudi Arabia. Arnold accepted and was quickly whisked to Saudi Arabia in a private jet. They played golf for a few days and had a great time together. As Arnold was getting ready to leave, the king said, “I want to give you something. It is customary that when I invite guests here I also give them something as a token of our meeting.”

Arnold graciously declined, saying, “I don’t need anything. Just playing golf here was more than enough!”

But the king insisted until Arnold said, “Okay, I collect golf clubs, so if you must give me something, I would accept a golf club.”

The king said, “All right, I will give you a golf club.”

On the jet heading home, Arnold found himself thinking, What kind of golf club would a king give me? Is it going to have diamonds on it? Is it going to be gold? What’s it going to be like?

A few days later there was a knock on Arnold’s door and a courier delivered an envelope. Inside was the title deed to a golf club—an entire GOLF CLUB! Not the type you swing but the type of club where you go to play golf![1] This is the mindset of a king…they think really, really BIG! It is time for you to play a bigger game!

When you think average thoughts about yourself, you will live an average life. Most people become satisfied with average. Average is your personal enemy to being your personal “best.” Most people have built negative filters in their mind that restrict positive messages of success from getting through. They have built a “rock solid” case proving only to themselves that they are just average people with average potential. Friend, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can be farther from the truth!

Thinking, acting, or sitting around being average is never part of God’s destiny for you. The way you see your future determines your level of thinking today. If you see a small future, you are having small thoughts today. If you see an absolutely huge future full of success, happiness, and prosperity, you are having large thoughts today.

Small thinkers don’t get the big breaks. If you want to get richer, think bigger first. —Robert Kiyosaki, best-selling author

The bigger the thinking…the higher the motivation to take action. Remember, in our Results Triangle, the third point is called results.

When you have big motivation, you will naturally take more action than the normal person. If you take more action than the normal person, you will become an abnormal person who achieved extraordinary results. Small thoughts produce small motivation and little action.

Your thinking today determines your performance tomorrow. If you think that you have a big future today, you will have the confidence to do what it takes to accomplish your dreams. Your life, business, and income will change when you decide to start thinking and dreaming big thoughts about your future. When you begin to have big thoughts, you start changing what you believe about yourself.

When little people try to drag you down—think bigger! When non-achievers criticize you—think bigger! When you get discouraged—think bigger! When the odds are against you—continue to think bigger! When you start thinking bigger, you will naturally start living bigger.

Confidence Produces History Changers

The only thing that stands between a man and what he wants from life

People who believe in themselves become pioneers. They are the ones who set trends and break records. They boldly do what others say cannot be done. These people are very often the inventors, athletic superstars, and the multimillionaires of a generation. When you start believing in yourself, you will start making a difference in the world around you. People who believe in themselves inspire others to believe in themselves. Your self-confidence is directly connected to how you think and feel you are making a difference in the world.

Confidence is the only way others will know what you believe in. What you believe you can do predicts your level of performance in everything you do. You will never achieve beyond what you can believe. When you start believing that you are among the best, you will start acting and performing at your best. When you start believing that you can accomplish big things, you will actually do big things.

When you believe that you are important you will automatically handle everything you do as important and with a spirit of excellence. When you start believing that you are worth millions of dollars, people will start treating you like you are valuable.

The Confidence Coach Says:

Many people, over a period of time, develop limiting beliefs about who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing.

You may have heard this story, but it is worth another telling. A 5-year-old boy was intently working with his crayons at the kitchen table when his mother walked in and questioned what he was doing. Her son replied, “I’m drawing a picture of God.”

“But honey,” she said, “no one knows what God looks like.”

With great confidence the boy boldly said, “They will when I’m done.”

This young boy stayed confident in the face of negativity. He refused to allow his mother’s limiting belief system to stop him from achieving something extraordinary.

Do you want to take your life to the next level? I am confident that your answer is “Yes”! You cannot change your life unless you can change your paradigms and belief systems. Your life today is built around the beliefs you had five to ten years ago. It is imperative you realize that the same pattern or way of thinking that has brought you to this place in life will not get you to where you want to go in the future.

I am fortunate over the years to have the opportunity to be a coach/consultant to many highly successful leaders. Many people who have achieved a degree of success in life are sometimes the most difficult to help. Why? They tend to justify their current way of thinking and working and state that it is what got them to the current level of success they are now enjoying. This is a valid point. However, a new level of thinking and a new way of working must take place in order to experience a new level of personal and professional success.

The challenge with most of our current beliefs is that they are often developed unconsciously, or without direct, critical thinking on our part. It’s really easy for people to be influenced by well-intentioned family members, advertisements, medical professionals, or government, without really thinking through the origin or motives of the information we receive. 

Unmasking Negative Beliefs

You may say, “I don’t really have any negative belief systems.” Yes, I know, I thought that way once myself so let’s try this little exercise.

Now, take the last number off the end of your income. Fill in this blank. ____________

Question: Do you believe you can do some really stupid things in one year to reduce your income down to this figure? I know your answer is yes just like 100 percent of our seminar participants.

Ready for the next set of questions?

Take your current income number and add another zero to the end. Fill in this blank ______________

Now here is your potential income for next year. How would you like that? As you think about this figure, I am sure you are also thinking, This is not possible. See, you had no problem believing you could reduce your income, but you are experiencing FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, and DOUBT all over the place when you should have the CONFIDENCE by now to add the zero.

You are probably saying, “Yes, but….”

These are the limiting belief systems that you have embedded deep in your mindset.

Is this number a realistic goal? Probably not. But the point of the exercise is to reveal those hidden wrong belief systems in your subconscious.

Never protect a belief system that has not produced success, wealth, happiness, or a victory.

Do you believe you can double your income? Most people do not believe that. Okay, do you believe that in one year you can do some things that would cut your income in half? Almost everybody believes that. It is easier to believe all the bad stuff; and because we believe all the bad stuff, more bad stuff usually happens.

Money potential can never be limited to what you can afford, “I cannot afford.”

Never say that, and never tell your kids that. You can afford it. You might say, “But I do not have money to buy it.” No problem! You just need to figure out a way to make it happen. Go to the store a buy a pack of bubble gum for $1 and teach your child to be an entrepreneur by selling each piece at school for 50 cents. Then she can save her money to buy whatever she wants.

Confidence Produces Results!

In last weeks blog we talked about your belief systems. Your personal belief systems determine how much of your potential is released in your life. How much you believe in your potential determines the force and magnitude of your actions to achieve results. The size of your actions determines the size of your results that you reap in life.

The Results Triangle


Over the next month we are going to look more closely at each point of the Results Triangle…  

Point 1 – What Are Your Beliefs?

I am convinced that 80 percent of success in life is psychology and 20 percent is mechanics. Like an onion, your internal beliefs are in layers called your belief or value systems. Your belief in the possibility of your great future determines your increasing potential. However the layer under that belief may even more important: the belief in your own potential, capability, and competency. 

It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. —Mark Twain 

What is a belief? The cognition plus emotion that creates with you the “certainty” about something. So, it’s your responsibility to identify and redirect any wrong paradigms you may have accumulated over the years.

I learned some things from Robb Thompson about fear producing negative results. When fear is present, we believe that negative results are imminent in our future. But when we are positive, we believe that something positive is about to happen. As those beliefs are confirmed by reality, we develop an attitude comprised of specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. 

Here is a striking statistic, but nonetheless true. Did you know that almost 95 percent of your beliefs are programmed into your internal hard drive by the age of 13? This means the paradigms that control your life were established before you were 14 years of age. Many of us have been programmed to be negative about ourselves and others.

Belief in yourself is the knowledge that you can do something. It is the inner feeling that makes you believe that what you undertake, you can accomplish. For the most part, all of us have the ability to look at something and know whether or not we can do it. Your beliefs control everything you do. If you believe you can or you believe you cannot, you are correct. So, in belief there is power. Belief is positive power; disbelief is negative power.

Your personal belief in yourself and your future potential is like a thermostat that regulates what you can and will accomplish in life. When you change what you believe about yourself, you increase your thermostat setting and increase your potential quotient. 

The Confidence Coach Says:

It is easier to believe the bad stuff about you than the good stuff.

Your mind does not have to work very hard to believe all the bad stuff you think about yourself. It is naturally easy to believe you are stupid, ugly, worthless, or a failure in life than to believe that you are successful, highly talented, smart, valuable, and beautiful.

Most improvements in your life come from changing the negative beliefs or thoughts you have about yourself and your potential. Personal growth comes from changing your beliefs about what you expect you can do and about what is possible for you.

Supremely confident people think, believe, and expect with every brain cell that they will succeed and win in life. Self-doubters expect to fail or lose, or they simply do not expect success or failure. When you expect and believe that you will succeed, you will. Successful people are just ordinary people who have developed an extremely strong belief in themselves and what they can do. They have no doubts. If for some reason they do not succeed, it rarely affects their strong belief that they will succeed the next time an opportunity arises. They strongly believe in themselves and in their unique and special abilities.

You must start believing in your own personal possibilities. What do you really believe about your:

  • Potential?
  • Future achievements?
  • Income?
  • Weight?
  • Relationships?

You must believe that you are smart, multi talented, gifted, good looking, a great person, and well able to accomplish anything you set your mind to do. Believing that you can succeed makes others place confidence in you and want to follow you or at least help you achieve your dream.

The Confidence to Produce Results

My personal confidence level throughout high school was very high in the areas of sports, appearance, and social acceptance. I was the “life of the party” and the captain of my high school track team. However, my confidence level concerning my communication skills and intelligence was very poor. I did not believe I was smart. Remember, starting in kindergarten I had been told that I was stupid.

Although my parents never said these derogatory things, they never told me that I was smart either. This omission caused its own kind of damage. Toward the end of my senior year, I thought that I was not smart enough to go to college. I set a low standard for my life because of a lack of belief in myself. Instead of attending a four-year college or university like the rest of my friends, I chose to go to an auto/diesel mechanic school because I thought it would be easier and best for me since they provided more “hands on” training than “book” learning.

During the first week, I realized there was both book work and practical training. I decided to buckle down, open my books, and study. To my amazement, I discovered that I wasn’t as “dumb” as I once thought. I finished the entire schooling with an A average. There was just one major problem. Although I completed the bookwork, I had a terrible time with the practical shop work. It became obvious that I was not designed to work with my hands. I hated working with my hands, and the thought of getting my hands greasy totally disgusted me. This is always the joke around our family gatherings today, “Keith a mechanic? Ha! The guy who gets pedicures and manicures.”

My natural talents and abilities surfaced—networking, communicating, encouraging, and teaching others. When I was younger, I thought my time going to that technical college was wasted. However, in retrospect, I realize that it was during that time when I started believing in myself. I realized that I was intelligent. When I started believing in myself and my potential, I had the confidence needed to take action to apply to a university. Today, I have earned a master’s degree and a doctorate degree from an accredited university.

This brings us to our Results Triangle: Belief + Potential + Action = Results.

Because my belief was…I am stupid, my potential was crippled producing an action of not applying to a four-year college. The result was doing something I hated!

Now for the good news! When my personal belief changed, my results changed.

  • Belief – “I am actually smart and I can go to a regular university.”
  • Potential – This positive belief placed a demand on my true potential.
  • Results – I earned a Ph.D.

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes (Mark 9:23).”

The very foundation of confidence is built on what you think, know, and ultimately believe. Beliefs are nothing more than a by-product of what you have thought long enough about that you have bought into it—always remember that. What you believe is a collection of continual thoughts that have formed themselves into a conviction or a feeling of certainty. Your personal belief in yourself or lack thereof, will show up in the way you talk, walk, work, act, and the results you achieve in the earth.

Live Life By Design

Confident people live life by design not by default!

Let me ask you, “How important is it to you to maximize the remaining days of your life?”

If you would have asked me this question when I was 16, I would have replied, “I don’t care about the rest of my life! I care about today! I’m going to live by my favorite song by Prince, I’m going to Party Like It’s 1999!

However, the more grey hairs that appear, and the older I become, my answer to this question is now, “It’s very, very important to me to maximize the remaining the days of my life.” Do you feel the same way? If so, I will share with you a proven process to achieving your desires and lifelong dreams.

At the age of 23, I wrote down all of my lifelong dreams and goals on a yellow notepad. By the time I was 38, something great but also tragic happened to me, I actually achieved all of my lifelong dreams and goals.

What do you do when you’re 38 and have already accomplished your goals? My dream of being married and living in a beautiful gated community had come true. My dream of having a book published and distributed in every major bookstore had come true. The dream of having a yellow corvette convertible had become a reality. The dream of having my calendar full of scheduled speaking events and television interviews worldwide had come true. My dream of traveling the world had also come true. In the eyes of most people I had become a success.

The Mental Fog

I spent the next two years of my life in a mental fog wondering what to do with the rest of my life. I asked myself, Where am I going? What am I going to do? What is the plan for our organization? Do I want to spend the rest of my life doing what I am doing?

Have you ever asked yourself these types of questions about your own life, business, or organization?

I was in a state of confusion. I have always been a very focused and motivated person; however, my passion and energy levels where dropping. I stopped writing and I spent less and less time going to the office. I found myself just going through the motions of my daily routine; I had lost my inner fire.

This is the mental condition I was in before I met my mentor and now good friend Bobb Biehl. Bobb is a consultant who has provided services for over 3,000 high-level executives over the past 30 years. I will never forget my first consulting session with Bobb. I explained how I was feeling. His reply was quite life changing for me. He said, “Keith, you have a lot of situational confidence—after all, you are an author and international speaker—but it seems as though you lost your life confidence.”

I thought to myself, Life confidence? What? I had studied the subject of confidence at least one hour a day for more than five years. I had told thousands of people on platforms and on major television stations that I knew more about confidence than anybody in the world. I had personally read over 100 books on the subject, but I had never heard anybody talk or teach about the life confidence that Bobb mentioned.

After thinking for a moment, I asked Bobb, “I have never heard of the term ‘Life Confidence,’ will you please explain?” Bobb said, “Life confidence is having a crystal clear focus of where you are going in your future and the action steps you need to accomplish your dreams and goals. Lifelong direction produces lifelong confidence. Keith, if you do not accomplish anything else this year, I want you to spend the rest of this year clarifying your life purpose, dreams for the future, the goals you want to set, and a detailed action plan.” The result of implementing the confidence solutions you have been reading in this book is LIFE CONFIDENCE.

Step Into Your Future With Life Confidence!

You must see where you are going in your future before it arrives. Knowing where you are going in life produces confidence solutions. You are on a journey toward your destiny. You are traveling down the road to the place of sweet success. The most important thing to a traveler is direction. You must know where you are going.

I speak to more than 200 audiences a year. I have been to some places several times. When I leave my home to go on these trips, I always leave with a sense of security and confidence because I know where I am going. I am familiar with the airports, the baggage claim areas, the rental car check-in facilities, the directions to the hotel and to the speaking engagement facility. The moment I leave my house, I know what my day will be like, and I am confident that I will make it to my destination with ease.

However, when I have to travel to a location that I have never been to before or to a place I don’t know, all kinds of insecurities start to surface. Why do these feelings surface? Because I am going somewhere I have never been before. I am not sure of my destination. I do not know where I am going.

If you do not know where you are going, how will you know when you arrive at your destination?

Overcoming Fear

As I have said throughout this book, I have learned that fear expresses itself in many ways. The most common fear is indecisiveness and the only solution to indecisiveness is clarity. There will always be unknowns, but indecisiveness magnifies fear and doubt. However, fear and doubt magically disappear once there is firm resolve to create a strategic plan for your future irrespective of obstacles you are currently facing. When your destiny and dreams for the future become crystal clear, you have attained unstoppable LIFE CONFIDENCE.

Confident People Are Not Afraid to Make Decisions

The ability to make a decision is what separates followers from leaders, winners from losers, rich from the poor, and the confident from the insecure.

Life is full of decisions. What clothes will I wear? What college should I attend? Should I go to college at all? What church should I attend? Which job should I take? What stocks should I invest in? What kind of business should I start? Where should I start my business? What contractor am I going to use? Where am I going to live? The questions are endless.

We are on a journey filled with questions. Where do I go next? What do I do now? How am I going to get there? A degree of uncertainty is a natural part of life and a natural part of decision making. However, decisions have to be made. Clear decisions. If you are going to wait around until there is not uncertainty about what you should do, you will still be talking about the decision until you are one hundred years old.

For every success story there must be a confident decision to do what is necessary to arrive there. On the other hand, for every failure or tragedy there is a lack of decision to execute what the leaders knew would work. Decisions create present and future events.

There are only two types of decisions: right and wrong. Your success in life depends on making the right choices. If you make a right decision in your life you may never know it. However, if you make a wrong decision, I guarantee you will know it.

When making decision, you must ask yourself this important question “Is the timing right?”

The wrong decision at the wrong time = Disaster

The wrong decision at the right time = Mistake

The right decision at the wrong time = Unacceptance

The right decision at the right time = Success

Decision is . . . The act of reaching a conclusion.

Decision is . . . To make up one’s mind.

Decision is . . . Information acted upon.

Decision is . . . A no-turning-back commitment.

Many people govern their lives around indecision. A person who hesitates can miss great opportunities. Confidence will cause you to jump at opportunities that will come your way. I can trace every mistake I made in my life to a bad decision or to no decision at all.

Life is shaped in the moment of decision, so make the right decisions.

Kay, the overweight, depressed, purposeless single woman, needed to reinvent her life. At 325 pounds, she was still living with her parents although in her late twenties. Confidence to Make Decisions that Shape Your Future

cIt is your decisions—not your conditions—that shape the future outcome of your life.

If you choose not to change and progress, then you have already made a decision, haven’t you?

There are “3 Ds to Quick Start Your Progress” as you decide to change: decide to lift your personal expectations; decide to destroy limiting belief systems; and, decide to develop a change strategy.

  1. Decide to lift your personal expectations—You must choose to raise your own personal standard in every area of your life: confidence levels, weight, potential, income, happiness, and so on. The most important decision I made in reinventing myself was increasing the standard of what I demanded of myself. My life started to change the moment I realized that my life was not shaped by my conditions but by my decisions. I decided who I wanted to be, do, have, and help in my life. I also decided what I would no longer tolerate in my life. If you think about it, many times your standards may drop because you keep company with people who have lower standards. Your life will be defined by the expectations of the people with whom you surround yourself. The old adages apply: “If you lie down with dogs, you come up with flies. . . . Birds of a feather flock together.” Say to yourself, I must keep my personal standards high and not allow others to pull me down.
  2. Decide to destroy limiting belief systems—If you raise your personal expectations but do not really believe change is possible, you will sabotage yourself. It’s not what you need to “learn” that will make you experience outrageous success in life, but what you need to “unlearn” that is actually more important. You must identify what wrong belief systems you learned in the past that are keeping you from becoming who you are destined to be. Elevating your confidence to a higher level will empower you to achieve the new standards you have set for yourself before you start activating your new change strategy. Learn More
  3. Decide to develop a change strategy—The ability to navigate from where you are to where you want to be requires a map. Being positive is not enough. It doesn’t matter how positive you are, if you run east looking for a sunset, you simply will not find it! You need the right strategy. How do you find it? Success leaves clues! When you do the same things and think the same way, you get the same results. Take as much time to plan a step-by-step action plan for your reinvention as you would mapping out a two-week vacation.

Determination. The decision to change requires determination to persist and to persevere through to a solution or resolution, moving you beyond disgust to a higher degree of confidence.

Your Confidence Engine

“Drivers, start your engines!” A stock car, dragster, or high production car has great potential. However, until the engine starts, the car cannot operate at its full potential. The horsepower of the engine determines the car’s top speed and how quickly it can accelerate from a dead stop.

Confidence is the fuel that empowers you to maximize your performance, potential, and profits. Most people’s internal engines are totally shut down. Just like a race car, the only way to achieve the engine’s extraordinary performance is to begin by starting the engine.

Every person is born with an internal engine designed to run on the fuel of confidence. Our childhood environment, the models exemplified before us, and the words that were spoken to us have either disabled our engines with negativity or fueled us with confidence.

When I was seventeen years of age, my grandpa helped me buy a 1969 Ford Galaxie convertible with a 390 engine. I loved to jump into that car, start the engine, slam down the accelerator, and peel out in a cloud of smoke and burning rubber. After about a year of driving the car, I noticed the engine was not performing very well. Black smoke was coming out of the rear muffler. The car didn’t peel out when I floored the accelerator; it poked along.

“Do you know what is wrong with my car?” I asked Grandpa.

“When was the last time you changed the oil?” he replied.

“Oil? I didn’t know I had to do that.”

The next day I took my Galaxy to the shop to get an oil change. I watched as the mechanic removed the drain plug and drained the oil that was black and very thick with dirt. After a fresh drink of oil, my car was back in operation. Of course I had to test it by slamming down the accelerator—yep, she was back to normal performance.

Unless protected and maintained regularly, your internal confidence engine tends to attract FUD that limits your life, business, and financial potential. Like a precision, highly certified mechanic, I will help you identify and eliminate the FUD inside your engine so you can accelerate toward your destiny, unleash your potential, and explode your income.

Four Internal Engine Conditions

I’ve discovered that there are four actions needed to restore your confidence to peak performance. You may need to:

  1. Overhaul Your Engine—Your confidence is at an all-time low and you need a total life makeover. This may be easier than you think. I will help you through each step toward transforming your life into one you are excited to live!
  2. Change the Oil—Oil flows through the engine collecting dirt. For the engine to perform at maximum potential, you must change the oil. Sometimes the negative forces of our culture can cause the dirt of fear, uncertainty, and doubt to clog your engine and limit your potential.
  3. Have a Tune-Up—If you have a six-cylinder engine with just one bad spark plug, your engine will not perform at its best. The same is true of your life or business; you can be confident in financial achievements, but unhappy in your relationships. A tune-up will revive your relationship cylinder, which may need a new spark plug to fine-tune your success.
  4. Install a Turbo—You may be a highly confident, successful, and well-balanced person. However, your current horsepower can be supercharged with a turbo so you can go from success to significance, from a dream to leaving a lasting legacy. Or you may be the mechanic who helps others make an oil change or install a turbo—instilling confidence in those who need it.

Examine Your Relationships


Continuing with my automotive analogy, you may find yourself associating with the following types of people:

  • Super-chargers—These are people who have more confidence and success than you have. They know how to accelerate confidence and move out of the pits. They can help you achieve your goals. They have already achieved success and will not be intimidated or jealous because you want the same result.
  • Starters—Positive people who are presently in your life who support you and cause your engine to start when you are around them.
  • Parachutes—These are negative people who drag you down and hold you back. These are people from your past who “remember who you used to be” and want you to stay that way. These people are hard to remove from your life, but to move forward you must cut the parachute’s cord or they will hold you back from accelerating toward your destiny.

You have to cut your ties with Parachutes if you want to be empowered by the Super-chargers and Starters in life. Super-chargers and starters fuel your confidence; hang around them. Parachutes are filled with FUD. Cut them loose. Embrace people with positive, confident attitudes.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

I am not a television watcher. However, my favorite TV show is “The
Fear Factor.” I love this show because most of the contestants model the force of confidence. This show teaches us the powerful principle of focus. What would cause a person to eat cow eyes, African cave spiders, and chicken eggs with baby chickens in the egg? What would cause a person to jump off the top of one speeding semitrailer onto another, reach their hand into a fish tank with electric eels, or get into a box the size of a coffin and have snakes, scorpions, and roaches poured on them?

First, it is the reward of winning. Second, it is the reward of $50,000 if they win. These people have learned the art of confronting their greatest fears with action by keeping their focus on the future rewards that overcoming their fears will produce. I have found that people are motivated to action in three basic ways:

Motivator 1. Incentive based on rewards. Your boss says, “Whoever sells the most products today will receive a $1,000 bonus.”

Motivator 2. Fear based on punishment. Your boss says, “If you do not sell your quota today you are fired.”

Motivator 3. Greatness based on the possibility of who you can become—a champion! Your boss says, “You have the ability to be the number one salesperson this month.”

When I first started working as a professional speaker, I thought I could just send out marketing material and people would start calling me out of the blue to have me speak at their business or organization.

I sat by my phone…and I sat by my phone…and nobody, and I mean nobody, called me. Thankfully a friend of mine, who is also in the speaking business, told me clients will rarely, if ever, call you. He also taught me that the main thing a new speaker had to do was make phone calls to potential clients and “sell myself.” I instantly thought, “I hate cold calling. I hate being rejected. I can’t do it.” However, my next thought was, “If I don’t get some speaking engagements really fast, I am not going to be able to put food on the table.”

The reward of food being on the table and my bills being paid moved me to overcome my fear of rejection. So I picked up the telephone and started calling potential clients. My friend told me that I would need to make about twenty calls in order to book one client. I decided that I was not going to focus on the rejections that I was going to receive.

Instead, I chose to focus on the reward of landing one customer that would produce a financial reward for me at that time of $2,000-$10,000. This financial reward motivated me to keep calling until someone said, “Yes!” By focusing on the reward, I was able to confidently move into action and destroy the wall of FUD that was keeping me from success in life. Those early days of cold calling were not very easy. However, by focusing on the rewards I was able to overcome my fear of cold calling and actually got to a place where the rewards for my efforts were so good that I started looking forward to the days I made cold calls.

Rewards motivate us to action.

The reward of a paycheck coming to you on Friday motivates you to get out of bed on a cold Monday morning and go to work. Even a stubborn, lazy donkey is motivated to action when you place a carrot in front of its face. Many people go through life and never get to experience the joy of actually eating the carrot. The only way I can stop a really hungry donkey that sees a carrot in front of his nose from moving to action so he can eat the carrot is to break his focus. If I can get the donkey to focus on the vomit that he threw up the last time he ate a carrot, it could cause the donkey to stop moving toward experiencing the same reward of eating the carrot.

Many people major on their fears instead of focusing on the rewards that they will receive by destroying their fears with their corresponding action. Many people stop short of receiving their rewards in life because they allow their focus to be broken. There is nothing more discouraging and draining in life than to work hard and receive little or no rewards for our effort. Now is the time to start moving toward the rewards you desire.

When is the best time to get started? Yesterday! No way.

Right Now! This very minute! Before you take another step, waist another dollar, lose another sale, make another bad decision, work to many long and hard hours, miss another important family event. Get the FUD out of your brain and prepare yourself for the next step of outrageous action coming from outrageous confidence which will produce outrageous success!

When you say “I can do it” your fears go away and your self-confidence increases.

Outrageous Rewards are Your Focus

Do you sometimes feel like nobody is in your ring cheering you on as you fight life through to achieve your dreams? If so, you are not alone. Self-mastery requires the skill of having the ability to keep yourself motivated. There are times in life when nobody is going to be in your ring cheering you on to victory. You cannot depend on the government to motivate you, your spouse, your family, your friends, and your boss.

Who is the world’s greatest motivator? I thought, Myself (of course, I am the confidence coach)? Zig Ziglar? Tony Robbins? If you want to know who the world’s greatest motivator is just look into the mirror. Yes! I have to take a back seat to you because you are the best. The greatest motivator in the world is YOU! Nobody and I mean NOBODY can motivate you like you can.

Motivation is the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal. The root word for motivation is motive. Which simply means a reason for doing something.

How can I get myself to get motivated and take action?

Rewards – The Force of Motivation

Focusing on the rewards you will attain if you face your FUD and take action is the key to self-motivation. Rewards do not just go to everybody. Rewards are passed out to those who achieve extraordinary results. They go to those whose performance and results are better than everybody else. At the Olympics, only the top three finishers get to stand on the platform and be honored to receive the Gold, silver, and bronze medals. Champions in athletics, business, and life do the disciples necessary to achieve these extraordinary results. Rewards are reserved for those who are willing to do what the majority of the world is unwilling to do.

Confession without discipline is delusion.

Outrageous rewards are more than just “needs.” Rewards are the things you really “want” out of life. Mere needs do not motivate you.

Here’s an example. My wife went to Wal-Mart the other day and she came back with sever bags of groceries. When she walked in the door she said, “I got you a surprise.” I don’t know about you, but I love surprises! My energy levels almost instantly increased. As I waited with great anticipation, she reached in the bag and pulled out a box of tooth past. Needless to say, my excitement levels dropped. Then she said, “I got something else for you.” I knew it had to be better than toothpaste. She then reached in her bag and pulls out deodorant. Again, my heart, energy levels sunk. Then she said, “I have something else for you.” My thought was it has got to get better. Then she reaches in the bag and pulls out toilet paper. I sincerely, thanked her for getting my toiletries.

Question. Do I “need” toothpaste, deodorant, and toilet paper? Yes! Did getting my “needs” met motivate me, energize me, fire me up to go change the world? NO!

Rewards are not needs but they are wants. It’s your wants or personal heart desires that really supercharge you to break through the walls of fear so you can obtain the things you really want for your life and business.

For example, I always “wanted” a yellow corvette convertible. I didn’t necessary “need” one; any car could have taken me from point A to point Z. However, because I wanted one I would always drive by the Chevrolet dealer and drive real slow so I could see all the corvettes for sale. I keep my eyes on my desired outcome. I would say to myself, one of these days I am going to buy a yellow corvette. I am going to keep taking action until I can get the reward. This motivated me to work hard to build my speaking and coaching business. I will never forget the day I drove past the dealership and right out front was my yellow corvette convertible glissening in the Florida sun. I went home and told my wife about the car. She was excited and said, “Why don’t you go buy it. We have the money for it.”

When I drove the car off the lot I felt like I was in heaven. I was so energized to break through some more walls and achieve even greater things in my life and business.

Outrageous Action is Needed

One of the fastest growing religions of our century is Christianity. If you believe in Jesus Christ or not, one thing you cannot deny is the success of this movement which produced the largest religion in the world. They went out and demonstrated their faith by their actions. The result was amazingly how fast this small group of people spread this message around the world without the use television, telephones, internet, emails, Twitter, Facebook, or radios to work with. The book of Acts models what we need to do, act outrageously!

Wisdom is useless unless acted upon.

Even though we are in the information age, information is not enough. Taking massive action is what ignites outrageous success. Wisdom is useless unless acted upon. I will tell you what I am positive about..Positive thoughts without positive actions will positively produce NO RESULTS! You can think positive while you are eating a Big Mac at McDonalds, but your positive thinking is not going to turn your Big Mac into a fresh garden salad.

I can positively tell you

• Those who work the hardest are those with the most Success.
• Those who work the least will easily fail in life. Failure is easy work.
• Those who take the most action are those with the most achievements.
• Those who take the most action are those with the most money.

Confidence Coaching Key – Whoever acts more at the end of the day, becomes more, does more, has more, and can help more.

You tend to live at one of three levels according to your confidence setting; survival, success and significance. Let’s look at each of these in relation to the amount of action required to achieve each level:

• Survival – Minimum effort. They do only what is required, lives to get by.
• Success – Great effort. They do above and beyond what is required, lives to get ahead.
• Significance – Maximum effort. They raise the standard, lives to leave a legacy.

Most people give minimum effort to becoming the person they are suppose to be, willing to do only what is necessary to survive. Some people give great effort to becoming who they are suppose to be and experience a degree of success in life. Few people give their maximum effort to become that person and they experience the joy of making a significant difference in the world.

Popular saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” This is survivors mentality. However, I like this thought, “Great things come to those who make it happen.” Stop waiting for your ship to come in and jump in the water and swim to it!

Most people move away from or blatantly avoid fearful situations. Writer and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said his entire life was changed the day he read the words, “If you would be a great success, make a habit throughout your life of doing the things you fear.”

When you confront your personal FUD with corresponding action, an amazing thing happens—your FUD disappears. Another fascinating principle is that often, when we finally develop the outrageous confidence and courage to meet a problem head on, the problem disappears and we don’t have to face it. When you have the confidence to make the difficult phone call, confront a problem employee, or make the sacrifice, very often it becomes unnecessary. You can worry about firing an employee for weeks and when you finally get the confidence to break the news, they may tell you that they can’t wait to quit working for you.

Uncommon acts create an uncommon confidence.

The moment of truth will eventually come in your life. That special moment when you will have to stop preparing and leap into action. Every new professional athlete plays that first game. When you say “I can do it” your fears go away and your self-confidence increases.

Everything you truly want in life is on the other side of your greatest fear. To overcome fear you must have confidence that you “can do it” and that you will have a positive, rewarding outcome. You will need added confidence to get you beyond “I can,” or “I will try” to “I will do!” Someone once said, “There isn’t a chance if you are afraid to take it.”

Overcoming life’s obstacles and making it to the top in life will require confident actions.

Confidence will move you to action and action will destroy all your fears. Action breeds confidence. Confidence grows by doing, not just by thinking you can. Only courageous actions produce extraordinary results. Webster’s dictionary defines courage as “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Courage is taking positive moral actions that conjure up fear.

FUD’s antidote is confidence. Most of your fears in life rarely come to fruition. You can overcome all your fears and uncertainties and start developing the habit of confident living.

I want to challenge you today to live your life contrary to the ordinary. The ordinary person loves to stay within the confines of the comfortable, the easy, and the secure. If you do what everybody else does, then you can expect to get what they get. Do what they fear and they will wish they had what you got.

Brian Tracy made this powerful statement in one of his weekly Email newsletters; “Remember that success is rare. Only one person in 100 becomes wealthy in the course of a lifetime. Only five percent achieve financial independence. That means that the odds against you are 19-to-1. The only way that you’re going to achieve your financial goals is if you get really serious. To succeed, you must get serious. You must get busy. You must get active. You must get going.”

At one of my seminars, I was talking to a 60 year old man who was so overweight that he said he could not walk from his kitchen to his bedroom without becoming totally exhausted. I asked him why he has not made a decision to take the necessary steps to lose weight. As I continued to ask different questions, he kept saying “I want to change my life, but I am just not ready yet.” I then dropped the bomb, I said, “You have not been ready for almost 60 years. When will you ever be ready?”

Failure’s most successful strategy is procrastination. This causes the person to get into the “until” game. The “until” people are always waiting……until they have more time.
…until they make more money…until things change…until the conditions are favorable.
…until things settle down…until, until, until.

Take action today! It is critical that you understand this one thing: Confidence grows by doing, not by just thinking. Only action produces results and builds more confidence along the way. Don’t allow your personal fears to keep you in a state of procrastination and inaction any longer. Real confidence in yourself is always demonstrated by action. It only takes a small leap to bridge the gap between FUD and confidence. You are only one action away!

Getting Back Your Traction

My grandfather had an effective way of dealing with any fears, uncertainties and doubts I had as a kid. I was very afraid of my grandparent’s horse when I was a young boy, but one day my grandfather’s exuding confidence finally convinced me to at least get up on the horse and feel what it was like to “sit on the horse.” As soon as I got on the horse, my grandfather took a two-by-four and hit the horse on its rear end. That horse took off running as fast as it could across the ten-acre Indiana corn field. I was able to hang on for the first 400 yards and then down to the ground I went. I picked myself up off the ground and was ready to go on another exciting ride. All my FUD of riding that horse suddenly vanished that day when my grandfather forced me to face my FUD with action.

Here’s a success triangle to help you find your traction so you can take massive action in the face of your own fears, uncertainty, and doubts.

Leg 1 – Outrageous Confidence

I was at my grandparent’s lake cottage. I was always afraid of the water, so I would not go swimming with the other kids. Once again, Grandpa had a way of curing my FUD. He gathered us together to go for a ride around the lake in the pontoon boat. As soon as we got close to the beach on the lakeshore, he threw me into the water and off he went across the lake in the boat. I thought I was going to drown that day. However, I made it to the shore and from that day on I was never afraid of swimming. Once again, when I was forced to confront my FUD with corresponding action, my FUD was

My grandfather had outrageous confidence in my ability to ride a horse and swim across the lake. However, I did not have any confidence in myself that I could do it. I needed the fuel of confidence to get me out of my comfort zone and into the adventure zone (see graph). My grandfather’s outrageous confidence in me caused him to take an outrageous action by hitting the horse with a two by four and by pushing me off the pontoon boot. The result? Achievement! I did something I had never done before and I received an outrageous reward of the feeling of pleasure for achievement. I tasted the wonderful feeling of what it is like to leave my comfort zone and experience the adventure zone.

A recent article in the local newspaper had a headline which read, “THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE TO LIVE.” I wondered where it would be; Was it Detroit? Miami, Los Angeles, New York? Chicago? The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the most dangerous place to live was not a geographical position on a map. The most dangerous place to live in is your comfort zone. The place of security, safety, the known, the familiar, the status quo, a place of no dreams, and just making a living instead of creating an exciting life. The comfort zone is a place where stretching your confidence and pursuing your destiny are things of the past. The comfort zone is a sad place. Losers are content to grow old there.

Real winners cannot be satisfied or fulfilled there. Race cars are created to drive at high speeds. Planes are created to fly. Eagles are created to soar. You are created for outrageous success. However, you must leave of your comfort zone to achieve it.

I read another article about “THE TEN MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO LIVE.” I began to ponder, Is it Key West, Fiji, Hawaii, or Bermuda? And once again I realized this is not a geographic place. The most beautiful place to live is in the adventure zone. The place were risk taking is normal. This place if full of dreamers, excitement, fun, energy, the unknown, financial abundance and living above the status quo. As they say in the Bahamas, “Come to paradise Mon.” The invitation to come is always on the table.

Overcoming the FUD in Your Life

“Every moment of your life you are making three decisions:

1. What are you going to focus on?
2. What does that mean to you?
3. What are you going to do about it?”

On June 14, 1990, I gave my very first speech in front of a huge crowd of seven people on a Wednesday night at a small country church in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The week prior to my speech was one of the most miserable weeks of my life. Why? Because I was focusing on the negative outcome of how terrible that speech would be. I could not eat. I was uptight. Negative thoughts controlled my mind as I continually rehearsed these questions: What if I fail? What if I say the wrong words? What if I forget what I am going to say? What if people do not like what I have to say? I don’t know anything about the Bible. What can a 23 year-old tell a bunch of old people about God?

The day I was to speak, I was a basket case. My palms were sweaty all day and my stomach felt like it was doing summer salts and it caused me to have diarrhea. I was petrified. My mind was focused on this speaking engagement being a total flop. A few minutes before I was supposed to speak I had to rush to the bathroom again. While I was sitting on the toilet, the forces of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) gripped my mind. For a moment, I wanted to run out to my car and go home.

I suddenly realized at that moment I had spent the entire week focusing on this event in a negative way. In that moment I made the first decision to change my focus on a positive outcome. What if my message turned out great? What if somebody’s life was changed by what I communicated? What if I actually communicate my message in a powerful way? After all, I had been preparing my first speech for over three months.

I made my second decision and changed what this opportunity meant to me…“This is my opportunity to start building my motivational skills as a speaker. I have an opportunity to share how I was able to change my life! I have been allowing Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt to robb me of my confidence.” So then I made the third decision Anthony Robbins said in his quote…I asked myself, “What am I going to do about it?” I decided to get off the toilet, step into fear, march back into the church with a small group of seven people and deliver my speech with great passion and confidence.

The result was incredible! Everybody loved the message. I was then asked by the pastor to give a speech every Wednesday night and crowd started getting bigger as people from the community would come to hear what I had to say.

Confronting your fears, uncertainties and doubts (FUD) is the cost of going to the next level. Overcoming the FUD must become a priority in your life. My responsibility as your coach is to help you face your FUD and overcome it.

How do professional people like police officers and firefighters who face danger everyday do it?

Police officers and firefighters deal with fear on a daily basis. The fear of death hits them every time they prepare to arrest a drug dealer or enter a burning building. Just before they go into action, they experience the feelings of fear and uncertainty—not knowing whether they will survive or not.

However, the force of fear is destroyed when that police officer takes the first action step to knock down the door of a drug dealer’s house or the firefighter takes that first step into the burning building to save a child. They literally step into fear with confidence, and because they do, the fear disappears. They are totally focused on the reward of capturing the crooks or saving a person’s life. By confronting their fears, they can focus on the immediate situation and get the job done.

Confrontation breeds discomfort and this is the reason why most people ignore it. However, discomfort is the cost of going to the next level. What you tolerate or are comfortable with, you cannot change. Whatever you don’t confront you are willing to tolerate. You can only change when you hate the present FUD. You must hate the present FUD and make changes today to qualify for a greater future.

FUD creates a mental block that will stop you from moving forward. FUD is a paralysis that stops you from creating a solution to your problems. It stops creative thinking. An antidote to FUD is as simple as confidently taking the next step—taking action, doing something positive, creative, innovative and assertive.

Overcoming FUD is a decision to claim destiny over past experiences, small steps forward instead of passive steps backward and moving up instead of sitting down.

Confidence is a FEELING of CERTAINTY…

Confidence Robber #3 — Criticism Your confidence is destroyed in the atmosphere of criticism. However, your potential is significantly increased through encouragement. Let me give you a practical example. Take a moment to remember how you taught your first child to walk (or watched someone do so). Close your eyes and remember that first time you got down on your knees, extended your arms, and encouraged your child to take the first step. You had that winning smile and your face was radiant, expectant, and full of excitement. Now, do you remember some of the words that you used in helping your baby take those first steps? Did they sound something like, “Come to Mamma! Come to Daddy! Come on! Go ahead! You can do it! I know you can! You’re a big boy/girl now! You can do it!” What happened when your baby took those first two little steps and fell? What did you do? Did you lecture the baby? Did you start yelling at your baby saying what a loser he or she was? Of course not! You picked up the baby and gave your baby a great big hug and kiss. Then you told your child “It’s okay, you will do better next time.” Did you play the critic or the coach? The Coach…Right! You encouraged the baby to try and try again. How many times did you let your baby try to walk? You gave your child as many chances as necessary until there was success. The atmosphere of encouragement produces the confidence and energy to get up and try again.

LQ Potential Is Within Each Person!

(Even if you don’t think so.) Every human being on the planet has the potential to become a leader; most people do not have the confidence and courage, however, to cultivate their LQ. I’ve heard people described as “born leaders.” But I must disagree. There are too many examples in history of ordinary people who developed into great leaders by the force of the need at hand—and everyone has that ability. You would be surprised what you could do if there was simply a demand placed on your inner leadership potential. It’s quite possible, a 90 percent chance in my own personal findings, you don’t want to be a leader or you have not considered yourself a leader of any kind. Whether or not you have viewed yourself as a leader, you will be surprised to learn just how many ways you are already a leader, especially to those close to you.

Leaders That Don’t Know They Are Leaders

LQ Solution: Sociologists tell us that even the most introverted individual will influence ten thousand other people during his or her lifetime. You will also be surprised by the fact that many people whom you consider to be powerful and influential leaders never wanted to be leaders, and even to this day do not see themselves as leaders. I know. I have coached and consulted privately with many of these people, some of whom you will read about later in this book. Leadership in its basic form is simply your ability to influence and inspire people in a positive way. Do you influence people around you in a positive way? Do you inspire and encourage people? If so, you have already been using your Leadership Quotient. How To Be More Confident – Finding Your Potential To Lead

Your personal insecurities create an invisible “glass lid” that keeps you, your congregation, and your church from growing to maximum capacity and potential. When you increase your personal confidence, you will unleash your true potential and maximize your performance. Those invisible barriers will be destroyed, launching you and your ministry to the next level—and beyond! An army of sheep led by a lion will always defeat an army of lions lead by a sheep. Many leaders have associated with sheep so much that they try to lead like a sheep when they are to lead like a lion. From Senior Pastor to Baggage Carrier A few years ago, in a private leadership coaching session, I lovingly told a pastor about his insecurities and that he needed to work on building his confidence so his ministry would grow. The pastor dismissed my advice and insisted that his “personal level of confidence had nothing to do with growing his church.” Unfortunately, over the next few years, his church membership declined, along with his personal confidence. Now he works as a baggage carrier at a Florida airport. What a tragedy! Don’t let this happen to you.

My Own Lack of Confidence

Just ten years ago I was so frustrated with my own ministry that I wanted to quit and get a secular job! I went through the whole “blame game” routine. I blamed my wife, my church members, my staff, the geographical location, the devil, and even God for the lack of growth and success in my ministry. Thankfully my life and ministry changed the day I discovered what the real problem was—I lacked confidence! The greatest asset of a leader is confidence. The greatest liability of a leader is insecurity. –Dr. John Maxwell The number one cry I hear from many senior pastors is, “Nobody is committed anymore!” Confidence is contagious. People do not commit to anything unless they experience the feeling of confidence. When a leader is full of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt), followers pick it up. When a leader lacks confidence, followers lack the confidence needed to take action to make the commitment to help you build your God-given dream. LQ Solution: When a leader exudes confidence, followers reward you with commitment. When you study the word “faith” in the Bible, you find three keywords associated with that word: • Belief • Action • Confidence

Let’s Look At Belieft, Action & Confidence In More Detail

Key Word 1: BELIEF Faith starts when you know God’s will and truth. The foundation of faith in anything starts with what you know and believe. The church today is full of people who know and believe a lot of Bible doctrine; yet it is possible to believe something but not actually practice or live what you believe. Your actions must be rooted in the truth of Scripture. Key Word 2: ACTION Faith without corresponding actions cannot be called faith. Faith without works is worse than no faith at all. Verbal and mental faith is insufficient. Faith must inspire action. The apostle James teaches us that it is impossible to have faith without corresponding actions (see James 1:22-25; 2:14-20,24-26). This is where the problem lies in the modern-day church. Many Christians believe a lot of different things. However, most confessing Christians do not actually follow through with what they believe. For instance: • The majority of Christians believe they should tithe, but only 5 to 12 percent actually tithe on a regular basis. • Everyone believes we should be evangelizing the lost for Jesus Christ. Sadly, only 2 percent of modern churchgoers have ever won another person to Christ. • We believe we should read the Bible. Fewer people are reading the Bible these days; only one-third do so in a typical week. • Most Christians believe they are called to do something wonderful with their lives. However, most people in our churches today are broke, busted, and disgusted. • Most Christians believe we should take care of our bodies—God’s temple. However, most believers are overweight, don’t exercise, and have some sort of health problem. • We believe that a senior pastor should lead the church by God’s vision. Less than one out of every ten senior pastors can articulate what they believe is God’s vision for the church they are leading. Hopefully you can see the gap. The gap between what Christians “believe” and what they actually “do.” What is keeping us from actually doing what we claim we believe? Key Word 3: CONFIDENCE “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (Hebrews 10:35, emphasis added). Confidence bridges the gap between what you believe and what you actually do. When confidence is taken out of the faith equation, you have a group of people who are constantly learning a new truth but never experiencing the joy of applying it in their lives. Therefore, they never end up reaping the rewards and benefits of the promises found in the Word of God. Our next video is sure to teach you some more success skills. Destiny asks the question, “What does the picture of your future look like?” Destiny is the beginning process of inventing or reinventing a person, church, or organization. Most people and organizations trap themselves in an old identity and never update who they are today and who they are to become in the future. Many people view the word “destiny” as some sort of mystical term that does not apply in the marketplace or ministry. In reality, your destiny is a preview of your future potential. Destiny begins as photographs, expectations, and hopes within our hearts and minds—things that we want to accomplish in our future. Your heart beats to the rhythm of your destiny. It’s the song that gives your life motion and the vision that propels you forward. Your destiny gives purpose to your steps. Everyone has a destiny, but not everyone walks the path to fulfilling it. Destiny is seeing with the mind’s eye what is possible for you, your organization, in other people, in projects, and in enterprises. Destiny represents God’s desires, dreams, hopes, goals, and plans for the future especially for you. Destiny is about unlocking and using your imagination to create a future you desire. Destiny is: • The imperative to exchange a life for a moral cause that will endure. • To be awakened to the opportunity to become something more than what you are right now. • To see something you have never seen before. • New possibilities. Once your eyes are open to the ultimate plan for your life or organization, you begin to experience transformation in your thoughts, emotions, energy levels, and actions. • The end result of the magnificent plan for your life. Destiny Is Bigger Than Your Past Failures

Destiny is greater than history, greater than the failures of the past, greater than discouragement, and greater than the emotional scars of the past. When you are awakened by destiny, you are empowered to see the pathway that will lead you to a brand-new destination. While the word “destiny” is not used in the Bible, the cumulative impact of destiny is defined in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (NLT). When you don’t have a sense of destiny or vision for the future, you tend to fall prey to the human tendency toward learned hopelessness and victimization. However, destiny is the daily fuel that empowers you with the ability to exercise patience, persistence, and perseverance in order to achieve your dreams. The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious. –John Sculley, former CEO of Pepsi and Apple Computer Destiny points you and your organization in the right direction. One of the main reasons why leaders do not have “leadership confidence” is because they cannot see where they want to go in the future. Destiny is not about setting goals. Most churches and companies set goals they want to reach each year. There is a drastic difference between setting a goal and being driven by a personal commitment toward a destiny. Destiny always points to something bigger and better in the future. Destiny should be so big that it requires extraordinary team effort. Destiny should also be so large that it will require ten to thirty years of effort to complete. Ten years from now you are going to arrive. The question is where? Dreams do “come” true, but dreams must be “made” true. Yes! Thank God for the dark so the sun of a new day can rise to your new possibilities. Confidence Coaching Key 3 – See with the eyes of grace. Don’t judge others when they experience a sunset on their journey and they have to face a season of darkness…you will eventually experience your own sunsets in the future and you will need their encouragement and friendship too. If you see somebody in a dark place today, encourage them to “turn back on” the light of their dreams in their darkest days. Confidence Coaching Key 4 – Crisis…the gift that doesn’t come in a pretty package. What you call a crisis, God calls a classroom. Confidence Coaching Key 5 – Failure isn’t a person. Nobody’s actually a failure. Failure is simply an EVENT or a negative OUTCOME you face on your way to achieving your dreams. The Hebrews knew that failure was a part of maturing in God. The Greeks used failure as a reason for disqualification. Your negative events don’t disqualify you from running God’s race to fulfill your life assignment. GET BACK UP! THE RACE IS NOT OVER! RUN TO WIN! Confidence Coaching Key 6 – Help More = Have More The more people you help, the “richer” you become, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and definitely financially. How can you expand your influence so you can help more people and grow “richer”? Confidence Coaching Key 7 – Your best friend or foe? My best friend isn’t the person who accepts me just like I am. My best friend is the person who challenges me to become the BEST me I can be. I need wisdom because the person who challenges me to grow may not make me feel good about them all the time. I have coached several leaders who have said, “I didn’t like you for a while, but at the end I realized you helped me to get better.” Who challenges you to get better? Sometimes our “good friends” can be our worst enemy to helping us unleash our true potential. Reach for elephant friends instead of rabbit friends this year. Confidence Coaching Key 8 – Knock and the door will be open. Some say, “I am waiting on God to open doors for me or the door shut so God must not want me to go through it.” My thoughts…If a door is shut maybe: 1) You may need to have a “unique” knock to get the door open. Don’t be like everybody else. Sameness gets ignored. 2) You may need to kick the door down. 3) You may need to make friends with the butler to get the door open. 4) You may need to learn how to overcome rejection and keep knocking…to be persistent. Be the squeaky wheel that eventually gets the grease. You have to go through HUNDREDS of “No’s” to get to ONE “Yes!” Work the law of percentages, and it will work for you. Confidence Coaching Key 9 – Know who you are. Your identity is your destiny. If you don’t know who you are…you will never know what you can do. Therefore, you will not have what you are suppose to have…and then you cannot help the people you are assigned to help. Many people want to “help” the world but they are 3 steps ahead of the game. First “BE!” The Change Agents Process: Be > Do > Have > Help > Made a Difference Confidence Coaching Key 10 – The Message of identity is transformational. Saw this quote and loved it…“Preach on sin- change a man’s behavior for a short while (as long as he feels shameful and guilty). Preach on identity- change a man’s behavior for a lifetime.” The first thing the enemy wants to steal (John 10:10) is your identity. If you don’t know who you are…you will never be able to do. Confidence Coaching Key 11 – Discipline produces miracles. Motivation gets you going. Discipline keeps you growing. It’s not the inspiration you get on Sunday morning…it’s what you do Monday through Saturday that brings about the most significant change and miracles in your life. Read Joshua 1:8. Confidence Coaching Key 12 – Focus Danielson! Keep focused. The person who chases two rabbits catches none. Confidence Coaching Key 13 – Success moving faster then ever. You must stay hungry and keep changing because success is a moving target. Confidence Coaching Key 14 – Hunger is the key to success/transformation The starting point of all achievement and success is desire or staying hungry. Keep this in mind. Weak desires bring weak results. Low hunger produces anorexia outcomes. A small fire produces a small amount of heat. Turn up the heat on the inside so you can increase the heat of results on the outside. Catch on fire and people will want come watch you burn. Confidence Coaching Key 15 – Dare to be different Don’t be afraid to swim against the grain. Zig when others are zagging. Beige is boring. Be colorful. Confident people value their uniqueness. Your uniqueness makes you expensive Confidence Coaching Key 16 – Poor? In America? What? Why? Why are so many American’s broke in one of the most prosperous countries in the world? Maybe because of this: 80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year. My thoughts – A formal education makes you a living…self-education will make you a fortune. Double your income by quadrupling your reading! Confidence Coaching Key 17 – Will you pay the entry fee? The greatest temptation to man is his unwillingness to pay the price for his potential. Success is not something you pursue, it something you attract by the person you become. Confidence Coaching Key 18 – Guard your mind. Why don’t people get outraged over the evil videos our kids are spending hours playing, instead of trying to stop our constitutional right to own a gun? Thoughts preceded actions. Fill the mind with violence and violent acts will follow. Confidence Coaching Key 19 – Skinny dogs usually have skinny owners. If your dog or cat is fat, you aren’t getting enough exercise. If you really value yourself, you will take better care of your body. Low self-esteem is the root cause of obesity according to Dr. OZ. Confidence Coaching Key 20 – Increase your circle of love. I am continuing to learn that relationships will always be tested with struggles, misunderstandings, and disagreements and we must fight to keep them alive…try to keep as many people as you can in your circle of love! Confidence Coaching Key 21 – Dream big and take small steps now. Success in life happens when your DREAMS get BIGGER than all your LITTLE excuses. Cut your excuses in half and DOUBLE your actions!

What Is Confidence

Confidence is a positive belief in yourself, your potential, and your abilities. Confidence produces a feeling of certainty, and hope empowering you to perform at your best, create workable solutions to your problems, think big about your future, take calculated risks, and act effectively to achieve extraordinary, outrageous results—and success for you and others.

Confidence is the bridge between where you are and where you want to go.

Notice that I never refer to confidence as pride. Confidence in leaders springs from an inner humility that seeks to serve rather than be served. Humility continually asks, “What’s in this for your best?” instead of inquiring, “What’s in this for me?” Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking less about yourself because you are focused on the successes or achievements of others. It is against the law for a captain to abandon ship. Why? Because it violates the number one law of leadership: think of others first, not about yourself. Servant leadership arises from the attitude that Paul writes about in Philippians 2:1-11 (NKJV). Humility declares that my confidence is in the Lord (see Proverbs 3:26). The humble leader can be confident without being proud, assertive without being aggressive or passive, enthusiastic without being hyped, and encouraging without ulterior motives. How To Avoid the devil’s number one lie:

I cannot afford a coach. I have seen this lie paralyze several ministry leaders. However, I have witnessed with my own eyes Senior Pastors who have stepped out in faith and hired me as a leadership coach and the process propelled themselves to the next level…and beyond. The three of us—you, Christ, and me—form a mighty team! Look at the biblical teams that God put together who changed history: Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Aaron, Joshua and Caleb, Deborah and Barak, David and Jonathan, Esther and Mordecai, Jeremiah and Baruch, Mary and Joseph, the apostles, Paul and Silas, Priscilla and Aquila, etc. You can’t afford not to team up! It’s time for progress. It’s time to move forward toward your ministry dreams. It’s time to enjoy being in the ministry again.


I have identified five ways in which many pastors tend to do ministry. 1. They do everything themselves. That’s how most leaders try to function, especially when the congregation is small (1-800). Eventually realization hits: This is too much work for me! 2. They do nothing at all. This method does not produce the results they are looking for and eventually causes them to go backward. This is too much disappointment! 3. They hire out. Some churches pay others to manage part or the entire load. This choice may work when the economy is flourishing, but in economic downturns, this is expensive. That’s too much money! 4. They delegate everything—even to people who have not been properly trained. This causes their quality and excellence levels to plummet. That’s too much mediocrity! 5. They develop others. Some leaders teach people how to do the task but fail to develop the head and the heart of the leader. That’s too much lost time! Each of these ways of operation has a negative drawback. Obviously, a leader’s focus should be number 5—to develop people into leaders. However, the challenge is having the time, money, and training material. The LQ Academy to the rescue!

Five Lies the Devil Tells Pastors—Five Truths from the Lord

Lie 1 – Numbers don’t matter, God is not into numbers. Truth: The more people attending your church, the more influence, impact, and income you will have to serve your community and region. Lie 2 – Money doesn’t matter. Truth: God gave us money as a tool to help us solve problems. How can you hire new staff without it? How can you provide resources for your members? Lie 3 – The people in your church are stopping you from growing. Truth: As the leader, you must take 100% responsibility for the spiritual, numerical, and financial growth of your church. Lie 4 – Location matters, your geography is stopping you from growing. Truth: Some of the most powerful and largest churches in the world were planted and built in areas smaller and in worse shape than yours. If others have done it…you can too. Lie 5 – I can do it alone, I don’t need training or a coach. Truth: Throughout the book of Proverbs, God instructs His servants to seek wise counsel. Helping successful pastors get out of their own way. Success is delusional and becomes a liability when we need to change and go to the next level…and beyond. Why? The belief systems that got us here are now preventing us from making the changes needed to get us to where we want to go. The higher you go, the more your problems are less spiritual in nature and more leadership, behavioral, and relational. I totally agree with Marshall Goldsmith, popular CEO coach for many Fortune 500 companies, who made this observation: Successful people are incredibly delusional about their achievements. Over 95 percent of members in most successful groups believe that they perform in the top half of their group. While this is statistically ridiculous, it is psychologically real. LQ Solution: TOO MANY LEADERS FOOL THEMSELVES INTO THINKING THEY HAVE FULFILLED THEIR POTENTIAL AND THAT THEIR ORGANIZATIONS ARE RUNNING AS EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE. I have come to lean on my “Leadership Prayer” over the years. I offer it to you as a reminder tool as well: “Lord, shrink my ego so I can learn more. When I learn more, I will earn more. Not just money, but more importantly more respect.” I have found that most leaders think they are doing better than they really are. Answer the following questions to see if you are in need of leadership coaching: • Is your organization or ministry experiencing a plateau? Yes / No • Do you have a crystal clear vision for the future and a detailed, written action plan to achieve your vision? Yes / No • Is it difficult to get people to commit to your vision? Three Mandates of Turnaround Pastoral Leadership

What makes a leader rejoice and become thankful? When a leader sees personal and organizational progress. Progress is when a pastor observes people’s lives being changed, church service attendance increases, spiritual commitment deepens, and finances increase—then the pastor has the freedom to expand serving and evangelizing others and hire the right staff and compensate them properly. I am humbled by the truth that 95% of Senior and Lead pastors whom I coach with the Holy Spirit’s help see an immediate increase in people saved, healed, and delivered as well as solid, responsible stewardship and financial growth. This has created thankful pastors who spread the word around about my ministry and leadership coaching programs. What makes a leader frustrated? The opposite is true: personal and organizational stagnation. Lack of spiritual hunger, decreasing conversions, attendance plateau or decline, frayed relationships, waning discipleship, and financial struggles. I cannot tell you how many leaders prior to receiving coaching told me that there were days, weeks, or just a few months away from quitting. In fact, many confessed they considered quitting every Monday. Are you in a season of progress or stagnation? Progress is the constant movement toward your God-given dreams and goals and a better life. Let’s look at the Three Leadership Mandates that will help you increase your leadership intelligence (LQ) so you can move forward and fulfill your ministry assignment.

Mandate 1 – See it as it is.

The first mandate of leadership is not to just “be positive.” One of my megachurch pastor clients thought if he would just keep thinking positive, problematic ministry leaders would change in his church. I told him, “If I were you, I would quickly fire some of your disgruntled employees,” and I named a few. He did not listen to me and the negative staff, along with the congregants they influence, actually ran him out of his church after he had started the church and pastored there for thirty-seven years. You can think positive thoughts about your church all day long—but negative things will continue to fester. Tell yourself nothing but the truth. If you want to be successfully effective, you have to start telling yourself the truth. Refuse living in denial. If you are not progressing, then realize that what you have been doing is not working. There is nothing wrong with having a problem…unless it’s the same problem you had last year. • It’s hard to admit your church is not growing because your sermons are only “good” simply because you are not spending the time necessary to preach “GREAT” messages. • It’s hard to admit that your church is not growing because you have not equipped 100 or more highly qualified leaders in your church, and you have been pastoring 5, 10, or even 20+ years. • It’s hard to admit that your church is not growing because you don’t have the leadership skills necessary to lead a church the size of God’s dreams for your church. On the other hand, it’s easy to blame the economy, your geographical area, and your church members for the lack of spiritual, numerical, and financial growth. As I am sure you have preached to others, “The truth will set you free.” Increase your Leadership Intelligence (LQ) by memorizing this: LQ SOLUTION: NOTHING CAN GET BETTER UNTIL YOU ADMIT SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Mandate 2 – See it better than it is.

Great leaders have trained themselves to look beyond “what is” and have learned to use their God-given imagination to see what “could be.” Great leaders only tolerate the present and live in the future. Everything created was actually created twice—first in the mind then in the realm of the physical. Refuse to see things worse than they really are. Some leaders see a thing worse than what it is so they have an excuse for not doing anything about it. It’s time to cut your excuses in half and double the actions you take as a leader. I don’t know how often I have seen leaders get stuck because they are afraid to either fire a person who is underperforming or too afraid to make the one change they know they have needed to make for a long time. I graciously encouraged one pastor to fire a poor-performing children’s church pastor. He said, “If I fire this person, he will start another church, and I will lose 50-100 people.” After an entire year of working with the disgruntled, lazy associate pastor, he finally fired him. Nobody left the church, and the children’s church doubled in size in four months. I lovingly told one pastor he preached too long. He said, “If I preach for only a half hour, almost everybody in my church would leave next week.” When he finally decided to take my advice and told his leaders he was going to preach for half an hour, the entire team stood up and applauded. By the way, his church started growing after that, and he broke the 1,000-member barrier. The number one responsibility of a leader is to see. Jesus said you are the blind leading the blind and the blind lead everybody into the ditch. Point people in the direction of a bigger, brighter, and better future. See things ten times better than what they are! LQ SOLUTION: WHAT IS SEEABLE BECOMES BELIEVALBE AND WHAT IS BELIEVEALBE BECOMES POSSIBLE.

Mandate 3 – Make it the new way you see it.

The third mandate of leadership is do whatever it takes to make what you see on the inside manifested on the outside. You need some TRACTION—a TRAC to take ACTION on. In order to turn your ministry dreams into reality, you need a detailed strategic plan to give you the TRAC you need to run on. I have coached some leaders who have notebooks full of plans, but they fail to execute the proper action steps needed to move their churches and ministries forward. It’s of the utmost importance that you get a successfully proven M.A.P.—Massive Action Plan! A fool with a plan can outsmart a genius with no plan. –T. Boone Pickens, Texas billionaire and successful businessman LQ SOLUTON: A DREAM WITHOUT A STRATEGIC PLAN IS A FANTASY, AND A DREAM WITHOUT TAKING MASSIVE ACTION WILL BECOME A NIGHTMARE. Smart leaders leverage the advantages of a personal consultant or coach. Don’t try to make the changes alone. Don’t rely on your own wisdom. Exponential Growth through Leadership Health

So how do you avert disaster and experience exponential growth? For the past 15 years I have been teaching leaders what I call The CSP Process: Clarity | Structure | Planning. Here are three exponential growth keys to help you turn your ministry dream into a reality.

Exponential Growth Key 1 – CLARITY

Clearly Defining the Senior Pastor’s Position, Vision, and Responsibilities. The first key is positioning. Where the leader positions him or herself is critical to building a ministry. How consistently the leader stays at his or her anointed, God-ordained post will determine how many of God’s mandates (both personal and ministerial) the leader will accomplish in God’s timing and how well the leader will survive. When the leader is in the right position, the response to God’s mandates is high. The ministry will have optimum torque and acceleration, maximum efficiency and effectiveness. As Senior Pastor, or CEO, your job description is this: 1. Communication – To provide solid biblical messages that feed the lambs and sheep: verbal inspiration, feedback, praise, and motivation. 2. Clarity – To provide crystal clear direction for where the church is going in the future. 3. Creativity – to obtain plans, ideas, and recommendations from the team. 4. Commission – to commission the work to the right people. 5. Competence – to provide for the success of the team through coaching, teaching, training, and mentoring. 6. Coaching – to evaluate progress, constructive confrontation and critique, to obtain evaluation. People normally do not do what you expect, they do what you inspect.

Exponential Growth Key 2 – STRUCTURE

Knowing and Implementing the Proper Structure The second key to exponential growth is knowing and implementing the proper structure that needs to be in place for the church to grow to the next level. I often ask people in my leadership conference, “What is the number one hindrance to church growth?” I normally get all kinds of answers from evangelism to children’s church to worship, etc. People are shocked when I reveal the truth, “The number one hindrance is the hyper-business of the Senior Pastor.” A ministry cannot grow beyond its ability to care for people. One person can only care for so many people without facing burnout. My number one assignment is to help a Senior Pastor structure his or her personal life to be a healthy leader. After I help structure the leader’s life, then I help structure the church so it can handle more growth.

Exponential Growth Key 3 – PLANNING

A third key in averting disaster is strategic planning. Some people say that desperate times demand desperate actions. I disagree. I say that desperate times demand strategic planning. For the past three years of this economic crisis, I have been busier than ever consulting and helping pastors with strategic planning for the future. With the exception of one pastor who did not follow his own plan, every pastor experienced spiritual, numerical, and financial increase… while the majority of pastors have been complaining and making excuses why they have declined. Just as in sports, the right game plan and execution make all the difference between winning and losing. Based on the principles from my book Leaders of Destiny—The Art of Turning Dreams into Reality, leaders are guided through a proven 12-step, action-oriented process that delivers significant results to accomplish God-directed mandates in His timing. Ministries are fairly good at setting goals but fairly poor at achieving them. Staying the course is part of the strategic planning and evaluation process and strategic planning chart. Planning starts with the leader going to the mountain with certain key materials to gain vision, direction, evaluation, counsel, and priorities from God. Then he or she forms directives (results and behaviors) with input from the wise counsel of a leadership coach and executive leadership team. The process continues with the configuring of human resources so the organizational chart reflects what is necessary to achieve God’s mandates. Most ministries are inept because they are organized by the skeleton crew they manage to keep and train. Corporate Uses Biblical Management & Leadership Principles

Secular organizations in corporate America know how to apply biblical management and leadership principles very effectively. As a result, they are exceptionally successful compared to most churches and ministries. They do not know and do not attribute, in most cases, their success to the Bible—the greatest management and leadership book ever written—or to Jesus Christ, the greatest leader who ever lived. God is not a respecter of persons. His wisdom, understanding, and knowledge are there for the taking (see Prov. 24:3-4). For example, secular organizations understand the power of discipleship. They don’t call it that, they call it coaching, but they execute and emulate the principles required to disciple—and for good reason. They understand that to have consistent growth and to expand into new and emerging markets, they must place a premium on training and developing their core people. Last year, IBM spent $100 million to develop 30,000 new leaders (disciples). GE had had a world class training center for decades. You do not get a raise at GE if you do not train and develop your people and create successors. Two years without a raise, and GE fires you. This has allowed GE to expand from the appliance business into other sectors, such as aerospace, finance, healthcare, and biotech. That is the “sending” process. Secular CEOs call this leadership development, constructing the leadership pipeline, and developing a leadership engine. In the ministry we have not developed enough leaders to meet God’s mandates. We have simply developed professional spectators who know how to “do church” but not lead. Organizational transformation must start with Senior Pastors understanding the dysfunctional environment they have created.

What Are Some Symptoms of Dysfunction?

Dysfunctional Symptom 1 – A leader’s lack of intimacy with God. When business for Him is not drawing us closer to Him, then spirituality has become performance, work is spiritually underdeveloped, and Jesus is not growing bigger in the leader. (see Gal. 3:3.) When a leader keeps giving out and does not take anything in…trouble begins. There is a loss of enthusiasm (entheos, Greek), a loss of God within. This often leads to becoming backslidden in the pulpit. Stress is not caused by hard work but by failing to secure the right object of our trust. Many leaders are adrenaline junkies. They idolize the work of the Lord: thus, the ministry becomes a mistress. Their relationship with the Lord is consumed with menial ministry matters—usually trying to help crazy, critical, and complaining people in the church who don’t really want to change. I ask pastors, “Where is your intimacy with God? Do you go to Him just to get a message or a word for others, or do you have times when the Holy Spirit can bring correction or conviction, strength or power to you?” When they describe their level of intimacy with God, most of them tell me they are somewhere between five and six on a scale of one to ten. Dysfunctional Symptom 2 – Disciples are not made; major mistakes are made and major opportunities are missed. For one example, according to Matthew 28:19-20, our principal objective and reason for existence is to reach the lost and disciple them. However, the average church in the United States retains only 10-15% of those God sends to them (a major mistake), which means we are not effectively assimilating, restoring, and discipling 85-90% (a major opportunity missed). Instead of the Great Commission, we have the Great Omission. As a result, ministries lose God’s provision—between one-third to two-thirds of their annual tithes and offerings. What is worse is that in all likelihood, 95% of those reading this article do not even know what their discipleship rate is. Do you? If so, what is it? Think about this—on the most important bottom-line responsibility, leaders have no idea where they stand. What does that say about our profitability for God? He is the principal investor. What is His return on investment? Can you imagine the CEO of any corporation, at their annual shareholders’ meeting, not knowing whether the corporation was profitable and what the return on the shareholders’ investment is? Why don’t leaders know what is going on with priority matters? It’s as if they are focusing on rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. To varying degrees, most ministry leaders are out of position: they’re doing the work of others instead of leading others in their work. They are being busy with crisis, chaos, needs, complaints, and problems—all kinds of micro matters. Being busy is not the criteria for success. That’s why I help Senior Pastors create a “stop-doing” list instead of a “to do” list. Jesus did not meet every need. He said, “I must go be with the Father.” Why? So He could accomplish the primary purpose for which He was sent. Ministry leaders must accomplish the primary purpose for which they were preordained from the beginning of time and reach the destiny for which they were created—a far more important assignment than that of any corporate CEO. Dysfunctional Symptom 3 – Leaders are not being properly developed. A third symptom is lack of leadership development. Leadership is the stewardship of those entrusted to us. The Lord charges leaders to add value to those He has placed in their care. It is not what we can get out of people but what we can put into them that matters. God’s perspective is much different from ours. He places people in our care and entrusts them to us, because we have something in us that He needs in them, so that ten years from now they can take what is in you around the world. Otherwise, He would have given them to someone else. The Lord is the God of transformation and transactions. Foremost, He wants His people transformed in the process of transacting His mandates. Just as the servants in the Parable of the Talents were given the charge to add value to what the master entrusted to them, so it is with the talents of people. Adding no value is wicked and slothful, says the Master. Leadership development is more than sayings, slogans, theories, lectures, and steps. Developing leaders requires learning from every situation through committed, real-time coaching and capitalizing on every teachable moment. That’s the discipleship Jesus modeled. When I help pastors set up the proper structure for church growth, the number one problem we run into is finding enough quality people to get the job done. The cry of most pastors: “I need leaders to help me!” We must take a serious look at the entire process of what happens to people when they come into our churches as a wanderers and then what happens to them once they are immersed into the culture of our church. Destiny in the Heart of a Leader The leadership process of turning a dream into reality begins with a deposit of destiny in the heart of a person to solve a major problem or meet an immediate need.

Jack Welch took over as the CEO of General Electric (GE) during a time when the company was facing some major challenges. This leader of destiny totally turned GE around. He stated that the first step, before all other steps, was for the company to “define its destiny in broad but clear terms. You need an overarching message, something big, but simple and understandable.”1 What was the biggest problem General Electric was really facing? Apparently the lack of a clear destiny. Jack Welch and GE came up with a statement of destiny when they set the following goal: “To become #1 or #2 in every market we serve and revolutionize this company to have the speed and agility of a small enterprise.”2 Armed with a profoundly simple, clear, and compelling destiny, Jack Welch led GE into a new and prosperous future. At forty-three years of age, Henry Ford wanted to improve transportation beyond the slow pace of a horse and buggy. He also wanted to meet an immediate need of producing a car that every person could afford and own. Henry Ford led his company forward with destiny burning in his heart to “democratize the automobile.” He said: [To] build a motor car for the great multitude…It will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one—and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces…everybody will be able to afford one, and everyone will have one. The horse will have disappeared from our highways, the automobile will be taken for granted.3 One of the greatest examples of destiny is Sony’s vision in the 1950s for its future: We will create products that become pervasive around the world…We will be the first Japanese company to go into the U.S. market and distribute directly…We will succeed with innovations that U.S. companies have failed at—such as the transistor radio…Fifty years from now, our brand name will be as well known as any in the world…The name Sony will signify innovation and quality that rival the most innovative companies anywhere…. “Made in Japan” will mean something fine, not something shoddy. Like Jack Welch, Henry Ford, and Sony, ignited by a destiny that was simple, clear, and compelling, your vision for a bigger and better future will serve as a unifying focal point of productivity and achievement, ultimately creating immense team spirit.

Great Leaders Imagine The Possible

You do not have to be a charismatic leader to build a great organization for the future. However, you do have to be a leader who imagines the possible and understands how to inspire and motivate others. Imagine what is possible; believe it is possible for you! To ignite a destiny requires you to think the unthinkable. You can increase your leadership confidence by using your imagination. All creation begins in the imagination, which is the primary source for creating change and the incubator of all ideas that eventually make their way into reality. Your imagination creates and preplays pictures of things you want to happen in your future. Visualize now what your achievements in the future are going to look like. Your imagination is an invisible factory machine inside your mind waiting to produce the photographs of the future you desire to create. Through your imagination, you can visualize and create a beautiful, undeveloped future that is in line with your true potential. Consider a destiny with an impact so dynamic that it will last at least one hundred years after you have expired. The whole secret of a successful life is to find out what it is one’s destiny to do, and then do it. –Henry Ford I spent most of my adult life being a leader of history. Why? Let me explain: I grew up very poor. My stepfather worked in construction. There were years when he went without any work and money for months at a time. We lived in an average-sized home way out in the country. However, I lived only a few miles from some of the most influential and financially prosperous communities in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Because of our location, I went to school with the “rich kids” who lived in the biggest homes, drove the nicest cars, and wore designer clothes from expensive stores. Eventually most of the “rich kids” became my friends, and I would go over to their big, beautiful homes to play and study. My best friend’s dad was a well-known doctor in our city. Every time I visited, I was amazed at the size of his home. The refrigerator was always full of food and the cupboards full of snacks. And he had so many toys! I remember thinking, I don’t want to be like my parents when I grow up! I want to be rich like this doctor. Consequently, I have been driven to succeed most of my life. I knew I had the potential to achieve my goals and it’s now my job to show you that you also have the potential to reach success just like anyone else does because it’s God’s gift to you. Leadership Skills That Are Needed For Success

The Law of the Lid This concept came from John Maxwell and I have taught, adapted, and shaped it for years into the following insights. When you get this law inside you, it will be a driving force. Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of impact, influence, and income. The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his or her potential. LQ Solution: In order to DOUBLE your influence, impact, and income, you must TRIPLE your learning.

Making An Impact With Leadership Skills

The preceding graph in the video illustrates this point of doubling and tripling. Both represent an average person who has a desire to make a difference, influence others, and increase his or her income. The first graph illustrates a very hard-working or productive person without leadership skills. This person has a measure of success, but doesn’t have good leadership skills. However, the person has a leadership position. If this person does not continue to grow personally in leadership knowledge, his or her effectiveness and potential for impact, influence, and income are going to be very limited. Now look at the other graph titled “Impact with Leadership.” This graph illustrates a person with the exact same abilities and work ethic but with added leadership skills for influencing others. This person has started to daily develop leadership skills. His leadership skill level has risen from two to six. This person is not working harder. However, his success, influence, impact, and income have increased by 600 percent. This person’s ability to increase leadership skills completely changes the landscape of that person’s potential. When I look back to that little church out in the middle of nowhere, I was the guy at two on this scale. I worked hard over the years to increase my leadership skills, and now I am at six. I see the level of impact I made back then compared to now, and I know it is all because I’ve learned that success is not built in a day.

Success Builds Over Time

Success is built over time through a process. It is not the big event we’ve attended; it is what we do daily that makes the difference. LQ Solution: Success is built over time through a process. The Law of the Lid says, “Leaders attract other leaders who are equal to or below them, but will rarely attract leaders with skills above them.” It’s not necessarily your spirituality that determines how much of a difference you make in the earth. It is your ability to grow and build your leadership skills, equip and reproduce leaders, and thereby leave a legacy. I have met some of the most spiritual people in the world in my travels in hundreds of churches, but sadly most of them are broke, busted, and disgusted. They are making no impact in the earth. When my first church was stuck at approximately 150 people, I realized that in order to grow further I had to improve my LQ. I had to work hard on transitioning from a minister mind-set to a leader mind-set. I had to keep raising the bar on my leadership lid.

Church Attraction Marketing Skills

I discovered that as I started to work on my LQ, my church started growing. The interesting thing is both our quality and quantity increased. We started to attract people from all strata of culture—both down-and-outers as well as up-and-outers, wealthy and poor, blue collars and professionals. The mayor of a nearby city came, then the city attorney, and next the owner of the newspaper of the region started attending our church. I noticed that the more I worked on and taught leadership, the more leaders came to our church. We became a magnet in our region for other Christian leaders. God wants you to be on top. God desires to move followers from being high maintenance, low impact, low influence, and low income to low maintenance, high impact, high influence, and higher income.

God never intended the church to operate in a survival mentality

We must move beyond a maintenance mentality to a leaders of transformation mentality. Surviving isn’t satisfactory. If you are just surviving and you know God has more for you, you have to transition out of the following mode into the leadership mode. The way to do that is to study and prepare yourself to become a leader. As you begin to grow in servant hood, excellence, knowledge, and understanding, you will start to achieve success, earn more money, and begin to see more power and influence in your life. How do you transition out of follow-ship into leadership? By studying the subject of leadership—this way you become the best at what you do. Leaders are readers. When you move from being a good follower to a great follower, you become a model or an example for others to follow. Good followers “dabble” at what they do. Great followers become “masters” at what they do. This is your first step toward a leadership lifestyle. You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar. –Trina Paulus How does one become a leader? Only a few people (15 percent) reach the level of becoming a leader—but all can become leaders if willing to put in the effort. And the reward for climbing to this level gives you the crown of sweet success. Success is never enough. Once you are at this level, you have to realize you have a good start, but you are not at the top of the mountain yet. And at the same time, you must realize it is not all about success. Leadership is never all about you; it’s about others—preparing and equipping the people around you. You must develop a team who continually reproduces Christ-like leaders long after you graduate to heaven. At this stage, we must be really honest with ourselves and admit that up to this point it has really all been about our own personal achievements, recognition, and desires for personal possessions. It takes a lot of humility and honesty to admit it. We can sometimes be self-deceived because we don’t think we are self-centered. The crown of success feels good for a season, but eventually a person reasons that there must be more. As a leader, you will experience success in life, but God doesn’t want you to stop there. Leaders reproduce leaders. The next step is to produce your successor. Leadership without a successor equals failure. So you are not really a good leader unless you take what is inside you and hand it off to the next generation through reproducing, not cloning. Initially, he was not fully aware of his leadership potential as he sat in an editing room working on his father’s messages. But awareness came to him. You, too, need to be awakened to your true Leadership Quotient in Christ. The insights in this book will do more than just help you “learn” that you are a leader. Learning comes from educating the mind. I want your inner self to be “awakened” by revelation so you will know without a shadow of a doubt that you are a leader. Learning is all about the mind. Taking Time Off Of Your Leadership Job

1. Can you leave? When I am coaching business leaders, I start by giving them my definition of a business: A commercial enterprise that produces a profit without me. The last phrase is profound—without me. Then I ask, “If you left your business for one month, what would happen to your organization?” Most small business owners admit it would fall apart, which shows lack of leadership. They have spent all kinds of time working “in” their business versus working “on” the business. The same principle applies to churches and nonprofit organizations. If you took a one-month sabbatical, what would happen to your church? Sadly, most leaders admit things would fall apart. 2. Are you lonely? Sometimes I will open my leadership conference by asking, “How many of you know that when you are a leader, it is lonely at the top?” Almost everybody raises their hand. Actually, if you feel lonely at the top, you are doing something wrong! LQ Solution: Inviting feedback is an essential skill to increase your leadership quotient. Successful people have two problems with dealing with feedback. 1) They don’t want to really hear it. 2) Their followers don’t want to give it to them. We naturally accept feedback that is consistent with our self-image and reject feedback that is inconsistent. The challenge: most people’s self-image is all messed up.

The Hamburger Tool is the proof that leadership is a skill. Very few CEOs know this skill—but now you are going to learn all about it. Scripture exhorts us to be imitators of God, and God is into excellence. Excellence is the continual pursuit of improvement. We need to continually improve ourselves. All of us think we are doing our best at what we are doing. Nobody wants to think he or she has a horrible life or career. But our best can always get a little better. Right? Based on my many years of experience, in order to get better, everyone needs a coach. You need somebody who is outside of your picture frame to give you objective insight. When you are in the picture, you can’t accurately see the full picture.

How To Give Constructive Criticism – Feedback

We all need feedback from an outside source—a coach or mentor—to get better perspective. Ken Blanchard said, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” I agree. Your leadership team needs coaching to make things better. Unfortunately, church members are often insecure. We want things to get better, but if we challenge people to change in order to improve, their insecurity registers feedback as criticism. Because most people are insecure, instead of giving feedback, we tend to hide it under the rug. We accept mediocrity because we don’t want people to feel badly. So eventually, everything we do is at a lower standard than the world instead of having a higher standard. To improve, we must learn to use tools to help people feel good about receiving feedback. Hence, the Law of the Hamburger becomes necessary. For example, an usher needs some feedback: buns are praise, the meat is the feedback. The bun on the top is praise. Take the time to make the person feel good about their current performance. Praise them for effort. Tell the usher something positive about the way he or she is doing their ministry such as, “You have a great smile,” or “What a positive attitude you have.” Sincerely build up the person and make him or her feel important. But if all you do is praise, you are not motivating the person to improve. You must go through the entire hamburger, the bun and now the meat. The meat is the feedback, but your delivery is very important. Don’t go into the meeting thinking confrontation—rather think clarification. Do not make it sound like judgment or criticism. Tell the usher you are sure he wants to be the best usher the church has ever seen, so you would like to offer some positive suggestions to improve his job and bring it up to a spirit of excellence that you know he wants to achieve. Offer your feedback as a positive not a negative. Feedback starts with the “what” and then goes to the “why.” It is not the “what,” it is the “why” that causes an action. Explain why this change in his approach to ushering needs to be done. Offer suggestions on how to do it and possibly point out that he skipped a step or exemplifies the wrong impression. For example, if he forgot to wear his name badge for three Sundays in a row, point out how important it is that members of the congregation and visitors can identify him as an usher. Impress how important he is because he welcomes both current and new attendees. The bottom bun is more praise in the form of encouraging him to strive for this new level of excellence; stressing his importance in the organization. Let him know of your appreciation for his faithful service, and tell him you look forward to seeing him with his name badge on next Sunday. When people receive the right feedback, you gain better staff and ministry volunteers—and future leaders. If this isn’t the case, you may discover that some people need to be moved within the church body to positions that are better suited to their skills, personalities, or talents.

Mistake 2 – We have gone after the down-and-outers, but have forgotten the up

I was sharing this mistake we had made at a church one day, and the pastor said to me, “Well, it just seems that God has called this church to reach the down-and-outers. God has called this church to go after the people nobody else cares about. Seems like poor people are attracted to this place. Every Monday for the past fifteen years, we have prayed for all the poor people in our city.” As he concluded his statement, I asked, “So on Tuesday do you pray for the rich people in the city?” He was obviously surprised by my question as he responded, “Why, no.” Then I probed a little further, “Do you ever pray for the influential and rich people in your city? Do you pray for governmental leaders? What about people who sit on the school board? What about those who control the media in your area? What about the successful business owners?” Each question he responded by shaking his head, “No.” Then I said, “What you are telling me is that you’ve attracted exactly what you have prayed for…only poor, noninfluential people.” The pastor realized his mistake and started praying for both classes of people, and his church started attracting people from both walks of life. How long does it take to move Harry the Hobo into leadership positions versus moving the mayor of your city into leadership? We have already established that your ability to succeed is based on your ability to train up leaders; the faster the better. We target Harry the Hobo and wonder why we don’t have any leaders. God has been giving the church exactly what we have been praying and asking for. It is important to realize we need both quantity and quality to experience true church health and growth to effectively transform our culture. There Are Three Different Types Of Leadership Styles

1. Carrot Heads are weakened by the environment. If you take a pot of boiling water and stick a carrot in the water, the water changes the carrot. The carrot goes from strong to soft. In the heat of the environment, carrot head leaders become soft. The environment changes the leader instead of the leader changing the environment. 2. Egg Heads become hard inside due to the environment. When you put an egg in boiling water, the water causes the egg to get hard from the inside out. Instead of staying strong and bringing change to the environment, these leadership styles allow the environment to make them bitter and hard inside. The change agent’s message will always be attacked by someone. It is tough not to become bitter when the ones who stab you in the back are the ones sitting in the congregation. 3. Coffee Beans under pressure change the environment. When you put coffee beans under the pressure of grinding and then into boiling water, the water doesn’t change the coffee. The coffee changes the taste, smell, and composition of its environment. Whatever your environment, you need to become a leader who makes it better because you are there. We have to create leaders who are going to bring change into whatever culture they are immersed. Ultimately a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus. –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. LQ Solution: See yourself as a thermostat that brings change to the temperature of the room instead of a thermometer that adjusts with the temperature of the room.

Every nation has a culture. Every region has a culture. Every business has a culture. Every church has a culture. In order to change the culture of a nation or region, we need to understand the key spheres in that culture. The culture is shaped by the belief systems of the people in that region or in the organization. Belief systems create behaviors, and the behaviors of a group of people create a culture. So in order to change a culture, we don’t start out attacking the culture. We have to start by changing the people’s fundamental belief systems. To change a belief system we have to repeat the teachings over and over until they become more than just a belief, they become part of their psyche or attitude. We start changing a culture by teaching and changing the mind of that culture’s members leadership styles. Repetition is the mother of change—and that takes time. So whether you are a leader in business or church, never teach something just one time. Keep teaching it until it becomes part of their attitude and they start modeling it in their behavior. There are seven key areas—many today call them cultural mountains—that shape culture in every nation. I believe that God wants us to change and transform these seven areas: 1. Religion 2. Family 3. Government 4. Business 5. Education 6. Media 7. Arts The only possible way to change these mountains is for the church to focus our planning and efforts on developing and training future leaders to influence and impact each cultural mountain and different leadership styles. What Is The First Book On Leadership

God’s DNA Spells LEADER The Bible is the original book on leadership. The author, God, is the first leader we meet in the Bible (see Genesis 1:1).

All Leaders Create & Build

What was He doing in the beginning? What all leaders do—creating. The first revelation God gave of Himself is that of Creator. Why? The first revelation He wants you to get is that of a creator not a victim. You were created to be creative. The Bible gives you pictures of what a leader looks, talks, and acts like. In the Bible are stories about Adam, Eve, Abraham, Moses, David, Deborah, Nehemiah, Joseph, Esther, Ruth, Jesus, the disciples, Paul, and others in leadership. As you read the Bible, you can easily build a library of LQ pictures in your mind. As you study these LQ pictures, you will soon discover another image beginning to take shape. You will recognize this picture is you. You begin to see yourself, not as what you have been in your past, but the possibilities of what you are going to become in your future. This mental photograph should become your desired outcome. Your enemies will try to paint a picture in your mind of who you are at your worst. The picture you develop of yourself is crucial to determining your level of impact, influence, and income.

Church Leadership – Can Church Leadership Be Learned

Leader John Kelly became my spiritual father; we started traveling together. I noticed John living out many church leadership principles almost intuitively. I would say things like, “John, you just demonstrated the law of the lid or the law of the hamburger” (As Explained In The Video). He would just look at me and say, “What are you talking about?” I had a hard time understanding why he didn’t know what I was talking about. Then I found out that John was raised in a home where his father was a leader; he had built some of the largest bridges in America. John was raised by a father who modeled leadership inside and outside the home on a daily basis. Church leadership principles that are caught are learned through example, experience, mentoring and coaching. It’s a process of maturation, impartation, and influence rather than instruction and information. Some people find themselves in a family, school, or cultural environment that immerses them in leadership experiences. Others must diligently seek education and instruction to be taught leadership. John Kelly was fortunate to have leadership modeled by his father continually so he “caught it.” Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good.

Most People Have To Learn Church Leadership

Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. –Ronald E. Osborn 2 The majority of people in the world are not raised or surrounded by leaders. This is why it can seem like leaders are “born naturally,” when in reality they have either caught it or have been taught it. The Price Of Being A Church Leader

I am impressed with the price paid by Tim Tebow, former Florida Gators quarterback now playing professional football. Living only an hour and a half away from Gator country, I must admit I have been a Tebow fan for many years. There is no argument that Tim Tebow understands how to maximize impact, influence, and income. His life made a difference on the Gators team, and now he is making a difference in the National Football League. As spiritual people, we can be tempted to think that Tim’s achievement is all about “God blessing him.” There is no doubt in my mind that God has been doing that, but Tim has also been doing his part to maximize his potential so he can manifest his inner leader in the culture of the NFL. I was watching a special on ESPN about Tim Tebow and how hard he had to work to improve his throwing style. The show explained the amount of time Tebow put in to preparing for his successful season with intense training, coaching, running, weight lifting, and throwing the football. At the end of the show, Tebow made the following comment: “Every day I ask myself, is there anybody else in this league who is working as hard as I am?” Then he said, “Most days, I don’t think so. I want to work harder than any other person in the whole league.” Here is the coaching question I asked myself after the show, “Am I the hardest working speaker / church leadership coach in the world?” Most days, I don’t think so. Not even close. Then I asked myself this powerful question, “Am I working hard in preseason when nobody is watching me so my performance can be outstanding when opportunity knocks on my front door?” How would you answer these questions? How To Learn Leadership Skills – Develop Leadership Skills

Leaders are master e-tank fillers. The e-tank, or the emotional tank, is like a gas tank. When the tank is full, you drive with confidence. Your team’s emotions are also like that; if their e-tanks are full, they will perform with confidence and energy to get the job done. However, if their e-tanks are drained, morale drops through the floor, passivity sets in, and productivity starts declining. Then you scratch your head and wonder why your organization is plateauing or in decline. A leader understands how to empower people so their e-tanks stay full. To empower people, you need to understand people. Empowerment creates momentum. When you have momentum, you look better than you really are. Without momentum, you look worse than you really are.


Empowerment With Leadership Skills Mean: • Seeing the potential of an individual. • Saying encouraging, empowering words to the person. • Sharing your power and position and influence with the person. • Showing others your belief in and power given to that person. In the church we know a lot about doctrines. We have heard a multitude of teachings and sermons. I jokingly say, “Some of us have heard so many sermons, we are sermon possessed.” We study the Bible to learn about God. However, leading an organization is more about your people skills than your great sermons or spirituality. If you desire to be a leader, you must understand what makes people tick—their psyche. Psychology is simply the study of human behavior based on how people think. Church members often know much more about the vertical relationship with God than the horizontal relationship with others. Don’t simply build spiritual disciplines, biblical knowledge, and understanding about God; you must also cultivate relational skills with people. Many people would like to stay locked up in their closet and have their “talk with Jesus,” but they don’t want to hang out in the coffee room and relate to others. As Charlie Brown says in Classic Peanuts, “I love humanity. It’s people I can’t stand.”

Learn Your Ability To Develop Better Leadership Skills

How To Live Up To Your Potential & Make A Difference

Social scientists in the study of human potential have created tests to evaluate a person’s level of achievement in life.

IQ, EQ, or GQ

These tests are supposed predictors of a person’s future educational achievements, potential, quality of relationships, job performance, and income. In 1905, French psychologist Alfred Binet developed the first IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test. The thesis was that a high score on this test measured a person’s intelligence. One researcher in IQ made an interesting observation: Having a high IQ can become a disincentive to action. People with high IQs and analytical abilities often can see more and more layers to a problem, and as a result, they become paralyzed because they can’t see their way through to a solution. When action is needed, they may be unable to take it. Psychologists have studied relationships between IQ and leadership. They have found that during times of relative calm, when there is no great premium on quick action, people with higher IQs are more effective as leaders than are those with lower IQs. But in times of stress, the relationship actually reverses itself. High IQ becomes an impediment to action, and the higher-IQ individual becomes a less effective leader than the lower-IQ one. Thus, the ability to think through alternative courses of action is important, but it is equally important to know when to wait and when to act. So, according to this researcher, IQ plays a role in leadership, but there’s more. For example, our Emotional Quotient (EQ) also impacts how a person leads. Daniel Goleman’s book, Emotional Intelligence, showed the world that success and achievement were determined not only by IQ, but also by EQ. Emotional Intelligence is the measurement of a person’s ability to manage one’s own emotional state, the emotional state of others, and the emotional state of a group of people. What Is A Leader – Improve Your Leadership Skills

Ask forty different people, “What is leadership?” You will probably get forty different answers. As a leadership expert, I thought it was important for me to come up with a standard definition for leader or leadership. I found there was no concise, universally accepted definition of a leader. In an effort to narrow the definition, I discovered there are many different facets of a leader; like a diamond, every time we turn it, we discover something different.


Acronyms help me remember principles. So in the following, each letter in the word leadership reveals an attribute. Throughout the remaining chapters, we will examine what this acronym tells us about leadership.

L —Leads E —Empowers A —Attitude D —Destiny E —Excellence R —Relationships S —Security H —Humility I —Insight P —Passion

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV).

Being Out In Front As A Leader

To lead simply means to be out front. We are living in a day when there is a vacuum in leadership. When there is a lack of leaders in the world, something or someone will rush in and take up the space and fill the void. The current church focus on developing professional churchgoers rather than leaders has created a vacuum making it easy for the ungodly to move in and take over positions in every aspect of society. When there is a lack of godly leadership, people will follow anybody who is willing to get out in front. We need to realize our mistake of not developing leaders in our churches who work in the marketplace—and we need to implement a solution.

Improve Your Self In The Market Place

We have good examples about how to behave in a church setting. Our challenge is to improve our example of behaving in the marketplace. When Christian leaders display poor examples, we limit our level of impact, influence, and income. When the religious leaders in a community fail to be exemplary, the people in the culture lose trust in the voices of that community. Trust is the most important and powerful tool we have in our arsenal for effective leadership. If people lose trust in us, we lose the ear of our culture and ultimately our ability to lead. The Bible contains stories of people’s lives who produced both good and bad results. Wasn’t God brilliant? We can learn from their good and bad examples, from both their failures and successes. How To Free Up Time To Build Your Church

True achievement is the ability to perform, carry out, and accomplish, especially something difficult.

How To Do Less So You Can Build Your Church

Busyness involves expended time and energy but not necessarily productivity. Leadership and management expert Peter Drucker said, “We spend a lot of time teaching leaders what to do. We don’t spend enough time teaching leaders what to stop. Half the leaders I have met don’t need to learn what to do. They need to learn what to stop.” Instead of a “to do list,” most pastors and leaders need a “not to do list.” Every Saturday night of the year, I have dedicated myself to conducting a church leaders’ seminar. No matter where I am in the world, I always ask the group, “What is the number one barrier to church growth?” The answers I receive vary greatly—from better music, lack of evangelism, being nicer to visitors, to needing a new building. The list goes on and on. In all the years of helping people develop their LQ, I have never had a crowd identify the real problem—the real barrier to church growth. In my experience, the number one barrier to church growth is the hyper busyness of the senior pastor. Just because you are busy does not mean you are making progress or reaping success. Your busyness may be keeping you from developing and training others to be the leaders they are called to be in the Kingdom. The life and ministry of Moses changed the day Jethro gave Moses a word of wisdom saying, “Moses, you are doing too much! You need a stop doing list! Stop working harder and start working smarter by training others to do what you are doing. If you continue at this pace, you are going to burn out!” (Exodus 18:13-27, my paraphrase). Moses needed to learn the “work” of leadership delegation.

Moses Changed Two Things That Changed His Life & Ministry

1. His way of thinking, and most importantly 2. His way of working It is both natural and necessary for a pastor or Christian leader in any sphere of influence to be a leader and set the pace in the church. It is often necessary to do almost everything yourself because you don’t have others to help you. But what was natural and necessary in the beginning, over a period of time, limits your effectiveness. Some pastors and small business owners are so busy that they do everything themselves without raising up leaders around them. Every leader has two jobs—doing the work of a leader and training a leader to take his or her place. Failure to raise up leaders and delegate responsibilities results in burnout. I have taught these leadership solutions to friends who now pastor churches with several thousand members: LQ Solution 1—The less you do, the more you accomplish. LQ Solution 2—The less you do yourself, the more you enable others to accomplish.1 LQ Solution 3— The less you speak, the more authority and influence you have when you do speak.

Learn Leadership Skills and How To Become Successful

Remember: You are motivated to become the picture of how you see yourself. What is see-able is believable. What is believable is possible. It is not who you think you are that is stopping you, it is who you think you are not. We are all meant to be leaders, but we need to follow God’s plan for us and go up the ladder and develop our leadership skills that are necessary for us to lead successful. Once we make it to a leader God doesn’t want us to stop there he wants us to keep moving and become a patriarch. Economic Downfall Due To Osama Bin Laden’s Attack

Osama Bin Laden’s goal was to release fear into the hearts of Americans. Fear and poverty work together hand in hand. When people are afraid, they become paralyzed and do not take action. Consequently, Americans had a “scarcity” mindset and stopped spending in 2001–and when people stop spending, money stops moving.Money does not disappear, it just stops moving and that is when economic recession, and even depression, begins. Economic prosperity flows when people have an “abundance” mindset and are not afraid to spend and take risks. As we close the first decade of the 21st century, we can look back and see the manifestation of the power of fear that came upon us at the beginning of the century. The result–economic recession, high unemployment, and people losing their homes. We Can Not Allow Fear To Bother Us

As we begin the second decade of the 21st century, we must refuse to allow fear to hold us captive! We must attack fear by releasing a SPIRIT of CONFIDENCE! Two old rock and roll songs come to mind: “Were not gonna take it…anymore!” – Twisted Sister “Out there is a fortune waiting to be had, if you think I will let it go, you’re mad…you’ve got another thing coming!” – Judas Priest If Americans boldly resist the forces of fear now, in ten years we will see the manifestation of a new season of prosperity–and recession will be something we tell our grandchildren about instead of passing it on to the next generation. Our forefathers were great examples of confidence, courage, competence, and character, and they produced the most prosperous nation in the world.
